My problem with ariel that I don't find in Merida

Ok so ariel was my 3rd preferito but then I re watched her movie and I have to admit she dropped way low I realized I loved her movie not really her as a person then Merida was my 13th but I moved her up because her actions were understandable anyway I'd thought I'd rant about it to get it out of my system and for someone to maybe change my mind *sorry for my grammar and/or spelling that might go wrong in this article*

Ariel has a lovely life under the sea however she likes the human world and discovers there stuff in shipwrecks and collects their junk. Now her father doesn't like that because ...well humans do EAT pesce but ariel ignores this fact and continues her Amore for human things and ends up skipping out on her fathers musical naturally her father is mad ...but it looks like she might get of with just a lecture but then the ever so cute idiot platessa, passera pianuzza jumps in and ruins it fast inoltrare, avanti >> she is in her grotto and guess what she sings part of te world that says and I QUOTE 'wouldn't te think I'm the girl the girl who has everything.....I've got gadgets and gizmos of PLENTY I've got who's its and whats its GALORE ....but who cares no big deal I want MORE. PAUSE ok put that in the mouth of today's 16 anno old girl ...can't te just picture her on MTVs 'my sweet 16' she just sound spoiled ..not saying that other princesses aren't, nit saying I'm not, just saying. Okay then Sebastian comes in ...she ignores him goes up to the surface then starts stalking the humans on the boat...ok maybe not stalk....but watches curiously then sees this handsome guy and be like "dayum scuttle do te dat fine piece of man right there...let me get dat" Only looking at his looks rather than get to know him GREAT LESSON Disney *sarcasm* -yeah sure she sees him act kind but normal people get married after YEARS of dating to make sure they are the right on I mean they don't even talk like Aurora, Cenerentola and SnowWhite. Anyway fast inoltrare, avanti >> she saves Eric some might call it selfless but is it really ...she's only saving him because he is handsome think of all the other sailors that died because they weren't as handsome as Eric and NO one saved them. Ok fast inoltrare, avanti >> she is at the rock and Sebastian is basically telling her how awesome it is under the sea in the song! and how crappy it is on land and he is right she is half pesce humans eat pesce its common sense not to go up there it's like if some Different species lived above te and ate monkeys, primates and mammals thats incredibly close to humans so chances are your not going to go up there crushing on them. Also te might say that king triton was wrong to hate humans but he really WASNT think about it humans are terrible they pollute the ocean now they kill off entire species and they EAT pesce te even see Eric Ariel's fake true Amore eat fish. Urg anyway fast forward>> she ignores Sebastian and goes with the little twat platessa, passera pianuzza so gawk at a statue of the prince, of coarse out of concern for Ariel's well being Sebastian tells her father who destroys her stuff realizing Ariel's obsession has gone WAY too far. She then meets Ursula's eels ...and out of anger and stupidity goes to visit Ursula. She sees the Polyps and hears Ursula say she has made her costumers polyps...she also hears Ursula say win him over with your body and don't say a word BECAUSE NOT TALKING IS HOW te GET TO KNOW SOMEONE. Great lesson Disney *sarcasm* she stupidly accepts Ursula's deal and it's not like she doesn't know Ursula's evil hence 'sea witch' and Sebastian saying SHE is a DEMON but NO she makes a deal with the devil for a guy she hasn't spoken to. I mean for someone that has lived under the water for her entire life, she sure is thirsty. Anyway fast inoltrare, avanti >> ok so Eric is liking ariel even though she can't speak but No Ursula cheats and uses her magic...but the thing is ariel is stupid enough to believe the EVIL SEA WITCH that once ruled the kingdom THAT wants the kingdom back will play fair and that she will not use te the DAUGHTER of the KING to get what she wants. Anyway fast inoltrare, avanti >> Eric realizes that she was the one that saved him and wants her even more...but that's the thing thats all he sees in her and her voice thats like it... Anyway he doesn't baciare her in time and she is taken back to the sea da Ursula where the king gives up himself for Ariel ...she then says 'sorry daddy...I didn't mean it I didn't know' that's NOT an apology that saying I didn't know the ocean would be in danger I didn't mean for te to be turned into a polyp. However she never takes self blame NEVER admits its her fault which it is she didn't mean for it to get out of control, and she didn't want to harm anyone but herself possibly...however she did intend to runaway from home forever for a guy ...she then proceeds to blame Ursula da saying "you....You Monster" yes Ursula is a monster but that's blaming Ursula for all this. successivo Eric stabs her with a barca which I would think with all Ursula's power she could have stopped. Then HAPPY ENDING she made a huge mistake and get rewarded for it with her prince who she has only spoken four lines too. *slow claps* great lesson don't te think???sure I might be putting way too much logic into this Disney movie made to entertain and please you...but I had to say it

Now Merida on the other hand it's not just one musical she misses it's not the fact she like to do sporty stuff...it's everyday of her life except for one giorno ...and get this unlike ariel she doesn't complain about it often she doesn't like it but she doesn't go Canto songs about how great she has it but wants more.She has her giorno of freedom and is perfectly happy about it however her mom who is already really strict drops a huge Bomb on her Marriage to people she hasn't meet yet proving SnowWhite and Ariel logic wrong for once. Obviously her mother needs to learn a thing o two about marriage and Amore too...Merida doesn't like it so instead of blowing up she simply bends the rules a bit then when that doesn't work and her mother throws her preferito thing into the fuoco she cries and runs off but not to run away to cool herself off a bit I mean jut imagine if te were Merida te Amore doing this...or that but your mother says no te are a lady so te can't do that ...or te are a gentleman so te can't do that...then she says ok now te have to marry a total stranger ...yes I know its Merida's job to do that but not everyone likes there job especially when it requires te to do something te are not ready for. Yes Merida isn't very noble for sticking with her job but that the point she Ribelle - The Brave enough to say no...anyway she is crying because her preferito item was destroyed so she takes a ride I don't think she has any intention of running away I think it's just like locking yourself in your room to either have a good cry o to simmer yourself down ...when she is lead to a witch ...I repeat LEAD she didn't go to the witch knowing the witch was evil and the witch wasn't evil either. Then she wants to change her mom using a potion ...so yes she is poisoning her mom but it's like hypnotizing her she just wants to change her moms mind with no intentions of doing anything terrible like leave them forever ...or kill her mom just to change her mind I've wanted to change people's minds on a lot of things doesn't mean I'm evil for slipping some shut up pills into there food. Anyway she does act quite selfish and brat like when it's clear her mom is in pain and she doesn't really care but beside that she acts quite helpful in getting her mom back to normal and they bond then her mom changes her mind on the marriage and really it's a great message don't fight your mother bond with her and she might see te side to it ...and Merida learns the hard way that Changing someone is wrong and to grow up because if I recall she was about to make a decision on who to marry when her and her mom were trying to sneak in. Then instead of being the damsel in distress she saves herself and saves her mom not to mention her 3 brothers and well the kingdom from mordu, and that's why I like her better.

Now I'm not saying I hate Ariel o I Amore Merida I Amore them both I'm just saying I don't like it when people say Merida is sooo terrible and ariel is soooo great...when in reality they should maybe be saying the opposite ...not saying Merida is better than ariel just saying. Please give your personal opinion and thoughts below in the commento I would Amore to hear them because they just might change my mind and feel free to name some points I didn't make o why te think the opposite.

LupinPrincess Ehhh I think it's ok to want a different life...I identify with Ariel in that way, it's not necessarily being spoiled, everyone has the right to want love or to be somewhere else or to be something else....if u picture a sweet sixteen I can see where Ariel would seem negative, but picture instead, a girl wanting a sex change, or a girl in a long distance relationship or a girl who just wants to live in a certain country, and then picture her father telling her no....naw, she has every right to her own wishes and she shouldn't be made to feel guilty

TheFabulousFAN Yah LupinPrincess your right but she wants a better life does that mean marry someone who's not right for you is it worth never seeing your family again, is it really all what you expected it to be I mean...without getting to gross or anything did she think it out I'm sure she wasn't ready for human reproduction and doesn't know what things are just imagine Little mermaid 2 she would barely know anything about humans and unlike someone getting a sex change she can't see her family she has NO one like her to talk too Unlike someone that wants to move away and change their name she can't go back unlike some who is in a long distance relationship and will do anything to see their gf/bf she can't break up with Eric she can't talk for end less hours to her best friends so was it even worth it ...for Eric I guy she has never had a full conversation with

LupinPrincess Well she has to live her own life, make her own mistakes, she's old enough for that, parents should always be there for their kid and give advice but NEVER control her, that usually back fires as the movies shows, theres blame on both sides

TheFabulousFAN Triton wasn't controlling her simply not wanting her to be killed by human he let her go where ever she wanted note she doesn't learn any lesson there is no fault on tritons side because triton was right ...oh and yes 16 is defiantly old enough for you to make life changing decisions *sarcasm* Ariel was wrong but she get rewarded for it , is what I'm trying to say...no regret no remorse not even an apology for Nearly killing every one All because she made a deal withe the devil...and also sorry if I sound mean I'm really not I'm just ranting off

LupinPrincess Triton completely destroyed her human collection, violently, u must have had good parents cuz u dont know what that kind of thing feels like, even tritons finds regret in himself later, quote "what have I done, what have I done" that's him realizing his mistake If a parent in today's world decided to throw around furniture or destroyed a child's room to "make a point" that parent would be in jail for having SERIOUS issues...that is NOT how u discipline or how a parent inforces rules! No child psychiatrist would be surprised at how Ariel reacted, do u think in that momment, her treasures destroyed...that Ariel felt like he cared about her feelings? Do u think she felt like she was home? That she felt understood, or at least, she felt listened to? In the least? No wonder she wanted to leave, tritons intentions were good but that's not the message he gave her, doing things like that is a perfect way to screw up ur child And your wrong, despite that, Ariel realized her mistakes as well saying quote "daddy I sorry I didn't mean to" she wasn't rewarded, Ursula won and Ariel was turned back into a mermaid, That's the movie showing that her deal with ursula was wrong The only thing that saved the day was Eric stabbing Ursula and then finally her father giving her legs, cuz he realized that Ariel needs freedom of choice, that was ow he redeemed himself as a father

324anna I couldn't agree more with your opinion! I think that Ariel has done many stupid things, but nooo Merida is the selfish brat... I like Ariel, but... Great article anyway!

Tygers_Eye An excellent article, I quite agree. In fact, you brought up something I did not consider before. Ariel went to Ursula KNOWING she was evil and untrustworthy, but Merida did not know the wi--"wheedler of wood"'s morality or competency or... spell capacity, really.

Tygers_Eye Honestly, I think story framing makes a huge impact in how people view a character. I think Ariel is very selfish, but the story frames her as being very sympathetic and in the right (and the few times she happens to be wrong, it's ALWAYS for a good reason) and any character that doesn't agree with her as being in the wrong. Even when Ariel screws them over with her thoughtlessness, THEY'RE just cranky and not understanding of her free spirit. Merida's movie, on the other hand, frames her desires as being selfish and bratty. It's pretty clear the writers don't think much of the "rebellious princess" archetype (according to Mark Andrews: "she's gonna a Queen someday and doesn't want to be, doesn't want to learn and just wants to be reckless") so the audience is led to see her actions as selfish, bratty and self-serving, even though they're very similar and better-explained than Ariel's.
