How on earth is Pocahontas/Rolfe winning?
We've been through this a lot of times and I'm getting tired arguing about it... but I'll make some comments.
My opinion is that the sequel completely distorts the characters of the original movie. Pocahontas and John Smith (as they are portrayed in the original) would never behave the way they do in the sequel. I can't really take the sequel seriously, since the crew that worked on it had nothing to do with the people that created the first film. As I said in a previous poll, I don't even consider the sequel canon. What's more, Pocahontas and John Smith have a very strong and romantic relationship in the original film that can't be so easily forgotten.
And honestly, how can the lame sequel-John Smith be the same guy that once said "I'd rather die tomorrow, than live a hundred years without knowing you" ?
John Smith and Pocahontas were very accepting of each others' differences, and yet they had enough similarities to be able to understand one another. They risked a lot to be together and for their love, so it was silly of Disney to seem to down-play their relationship in the sequel.
John Rolfe was basically the white Kocoum. He and Pocahontas clashed, personality-wise, and Rolfe's change of heart and so-called character developement was very sudden and came at a convenient time- when John Smith didn't support Poca's decision. Another problem I have with her relationship with Rolfe is that Pocahontas and John Smith's characters were "tampered with" in order to justify Poca ending up with Rolfe. Disney seemed to force "Pocahontas and John Rolfe are meant to be together" down our throats, and I prefer to form my own opinions.
I don't care if Poca ending up with Rolfe is historically accurate. The real Pocahontas may have meant to be with John Rolfe, but Disney's Pocahontas is meant to be with John Smith. Smith is even considered Poca's official, canonical true love, according to Disney.
(EDIT: I just noticed your first comment, you're so right!)
@Danderfluff1: I love John Smith, so I can't understand why anyone would hate him ;)
I'm just going to settle on preferring her to be single.
I always consider Pocahontas in the sequel is a different Pocahontas. Pocahontas 2 acts nothing like Pocahontas who wants to stop the fight so she can be with John Smith. The original Pocahontas won't easily forget John and moves to a stick-in-the-mud, boring Rolfe. Agree with magnoliainmay about Rolfe is like Kocoum and Disney's Pocahontas is meant for John Smith. I don't care about the history accuracy since Disney can make its own story like it does to other fairy tales or even other movie production like Fox changes the story of Anastasia.
