Living in the ocean seems fun but after a while it would probably get boring.

I like being a human.

Ice powers seem like a real nuisance.

I want Elsa's ice powers so I can combat global climate change by re-freezing the polar ice caps, restoring the ice and snow in areas where it's starting to melt, and just help restore what's lost.

Tyger_Eye, I'm not saying you wouldn't have good point but on a long term you would probably just mess earth's environment more. And on the other hand being mermaid could also help fighting for environment, just imagine if there really were mermaids who'd talk against eg. big countries to stop ruining the ocean and their home. I think that would really get a lot of support from regular people and in my opinion it's most important to get everyone realize how they're destroying this planet and make them themselves change their habits. To make them see what they're doing to other thinking and feeling creature, kinda like when whale hunting stopped when people learned whales can sing.
I don't mean that ice lady fighting for environment wouldn't get support from people too, but I feel like some people would simply continue their old ways as they think that the ice lady saves polar bears anyway so they don't have to bother.

Sorry for the little rant, and btw I didn't choose this option because environment, I choose it because I love diving :P Your comment just made me think a little.

fiina: No offense, but at the rate we're going I don't see how strengthening the melting polar caps, bringing snowy winters back to places where snow and ice is receding could make things WORSE than if I did nothing. I'm a Sustainability minor and an environmental intern, so I've got a pretty depressing understanding of how badly things stand.

Besides, I didn't say I wanted to do it to drum up "interest," because honestly I feel at this point that it would take it would take some sort of environmental apocalypse to make people pay attention. Detrimental health conditions and erratic weather hasn't worked, so what would a mermaid do?

I would want the ice powers because I'm tired of waiting for people to do something when nothing's getting done. I'd rather take matters into my own hands.

Besides, the ocean is in BAD SHAPE. Like, almost unlivable in many areas. The high rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere being absorbed into the ocean is making the water so acidic that it is literally melting the fragile flesh off many sponges, clams, and little invertebrates. Plastic particles that break down but never fully decompose from the plastic we throw away every day are so abundant (and so microscopic) that they are ending up stuck in the systems tracks of countless marine life. Hundreds of marine animals die every year because their systems are backed up with plastic. Good old fashioned garbage, oil spills, and toxic dumps are in no short supply; have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? Not to mention many ocean ecysystems are collapsing thanks to over-fishing, shark-hunting, and whaling.

It's funny, I keep seeing people say, "Save the killer whales from slavery in Sea World! Put these intelligent, majestic creatures back in their natural environment where they belong!" But no one thinks "Let's make their natural environment the kind of place they can actually, you know, LIVE, since humans have made it our dumping ground."

Why would they change their mind about a mermaid? Then YOU'D have to live in captivity for years because human-filtered aquariums are far cleaner than the ocean, while people take their sweet time parting with so much as their plastic shopping bags to help. After all, THEY don't live in the ocean, and billions of tons of pollution doesn't float in THEIR backyard (it comes filtered in the bottled water they buy!), so why should they care?
