I love her and I'm convinced she would be my favorite if I didn't have a 10 year history with the Renaissance girls.

I love her, she's my 4th favorite. I especially appreciate how she admit her mistake and fix the problems due of her actions, and learns from her experience. She's even better than some popular princesses.
Sadly she didn't get more love :(

As much as I adore her, she's about middle on my favorites list due to loving others just slightly more. Which says a lot about the others because I LOVE MERIDA.

She does stupid things sometimes, but she fixes them and is heroic.

Not a huge fan, but I like her character development. I like her a lot more at the end.

I only feel better about Merida at the end of Brave. She's really, really hard for me to like for most of the movie.

I DESPISE her! Her "character development" is poorly done and rushed, she tries to change who her mother is, doesn't care that war will break out and cause suffering for others if she doesn't marry ("We'll expect your declarations of war in the morning"), she's bratty, she rudely knocks over things and leaves food on the floor for her servants to pick up after, she's a faux action girl that is promoted to be more strong and independent than the past Disney Princesses but is constantly having to be saved by her mother and her brothers to where she's more of a damsel in distress than the three classic Disney Princesses, she doesn't admit it's her fault until the end and it felt last minute, and she basically tried to poison her mother. With a character this flawed, she needed some amazing character development and she really doesn't have that AT ALL. Her not wanting to get married situation was selfish and biased.

1. They made the suitors so unappealing and such incompetent losers that we're forced to feel sorry for her. If the suitors were just as attractive, skilled, and competent as she was (As well as being nice guys) then I might feel something because it would mean she's just not ready to get married. Instead, they had to make these three be so unappealing to force us to feel sorry for her.

2. I have defended other characters who didn't want to be forced to be married like Jasmine but there was a difference there. There wasn't a risk of war breaking out if Jasmine didn't marry (Although, I'm curious how they didn't have a war break out from her having her pet tiger attack a visiting prince lol). Jasmine was only having to get married because of tradition and not because the fate of her kingdom depended on it like with Merida. She even knows that war would happen but doesn't care and just jokes about it.

Her "character development" is horrendous, she tries to change her mother (don't even get me started on her not getting worried when Elinor was sick from eating the cake Merida poisoned her with. Problematic, problematic, PROBLEMATIC), she's a total brat and snob, she rudely knocks over food and has no thought or consideration for the castle servants (Because fuck being a decent human being, right? Selfish, spoiled people like this are the absolute worst), she's not strong and independent at all (when Disney and Pixar were promoting her as such. Can someone say "false advertisement"?), she's more of a damsel in distress than any of the other Disney Princesses, her idea of "freedom" is having no goals and zero responsibilities, her personality is so boring and unlikable, and (this is a more petty, shallow reason to dislike her) she's absolutely homely and unattractive and has the face of a 5-year-old.
I'm considering full-on hating her instead of just disliking her.

see, this is why I think merida is the most disliked princess, the current highest votes rn are for "I dislike her" and I don't think it would be the same for any other princess?

I really want to like her more, but the way she acts when she turns her mother into a bear is a definite setback in terms of how much I like her.

I sort of appreciate Pixar's attempt at making a feminist character, but Merida is a bit too flawed to be likeable. It's been a while since I have seen the movie, but I don't really remember much character development on her part. She starts out as a hotheaded, selfish girl, and she stays that way.
