I did think it seemed a little unrealistic, I can understand her contemplating it for a moment but Edward was everything to her, and if the situation was reserved, I can't imagine Edward thinking the same

How the hell should she know that he would be back? Like he said himself, he's a good liar, it makes a whole lot of sense for her to believe that he did leave her, especially because she had the feeling that she wasn't good enough for him (or he was too good for her)...
