This section of my guide for fanpop users details the ratings system and was last edited on 26 May 2008.

As with any web site, fanpop is only as good as its content. Some content - what I think of as the soul of the site - is generated da users in the fora and in commenti on the rest of the content and cannot be rated. But the rest of the content - the body of the site - has a ratings system. The whole principle of the ratings system is a democratic one: if enough people vote, the really qualified items rise to the top. That's why everything that can be rated can be sorted in a lista from highest to lowest ratings, so that te o anyone else can see the good stuff first.

The importance of rating
Rating is voluntary. However, there are four reasons to rate content:

1) Rated content makes fanpop work. fanpop is organized around spots, and spots can contain a lot of content related to the spot's topic. Every spot has the ability to sort its content in a number of ways, including "highest rated". As più content is added to a spot, the più important it is for someone coming to that spot to be able to perform that "highest rated" sort on the content, particularly for new fan just starting out to discover a new topic. If there's no way to distinguish between all the content in a spot without looking at it all piece da piece, the site becomes mostly pointless. You'd do as well sticking to a cerca catalog like Google o Yahoo if te have to sift through a long lista to find the good stuff. Ratings are integral to the value of the site.

2) Bad content get suppressed. This is the flip side of the coin; since good content gets promoted, bad content drops further and further down the lists sorted da "highest rated". This saves people from seeing something really awful right off the bat, and reduces the chance that a new user checking out a spot for the first time will turn away from the spot in disgust because of a few experiences with bad content.

3) Users get recognized. As più people rate the content on the site, those who post the content that gets good ratings will gradually earn medaglie for their contributions. This is Fanpop's way of encouraging good participation in a spot. We, as users, define what is good in that precedente sentence, simply da our ratings. When we rate something highly, not only is the user who postato it that much closer to getting a medal, but più importantly, that user knows that someone on the site appreciated what they've posted.

Similarly, those who post content that gets bad ratings can use those ratings as a guideline for their future submissions: "people didn't like that, so let's try something different with the successivo submission". Without giving poor content a low rating, the user who postato the content can't get the message and will have no reason to try something different successivo time.

4) You get recognized. fanpop keeps a tally of how many ratings you've given, listed on your profilo page. Every time te rate, that number goes up, demonstrating to the fanpop community that te are participating in making the site work.

What to rate
So, the domanda may come: what should one rate? Well, first of all, there are certain types of content that can be rated on fanpop (others cannot). The following types of content can be rated:
* links
* videos
* soapbox articles
* images

The following cannot be rated:
* spots
* picks
* forum threads
* forum posts
* news
* fans

successivo one should consider what sorts of things to rate. Usually, one rates on the quality of the content alone. This is fine as long as the content works in the spot in which it is found. If there is a problem - a non aesthetic problem - with the content, it almost certainly should be reported, and not rated. See the link for my più detailed explanation of reporting.

How to rate
So, you've found something that works for the spot in which it is found, te have a reaction to it - positive o negative - then te should rate it. How do te do that?
 A link te have rated
A link te have rated

Each of the types of content te may rate - links, videos, soapbox articoli and immagini - have a band of five stars with a legend "You rated:" above it. If you've already rated this particular content item, it will mostra the rating te submitted.
 A link te haven't rated. For shame!
A link te haven't rated. For shame!
If te haven't, it will mostra the circles as grey outlines, with "rate this link" superimposed.

Whether you've rated a link already o not, te can rate it (with one exception - see below). To rate, click on the stella, star that represents the rating you'd like to give the content. The stars rank in increasing order from left to right, so if te wanted to rate the content three stars, you'd click the middle star, while two stars would be the secondo stella, star from the left, and four stars would be the fourth stella, star from the left.

What do the ratings mean, though? The five stars are explained in the link, but I'll go into più detail here:

One stella, star indicates that te think the content is garbage. It's offensive not because it violates any of the terms of service o is miscategorized, but because te feel it has no intrinsic value.
Two stars indicates that te think the content is blah, uninteresting, sub-standard and/or mediocre.
Three stars indicates that te think that the content is OK. This covers a broad range from "I think it's appropriate to the spot, pretty standard content" to "I think it's pretty good".
Four stars indicates that te think the content is great. It's superior to the usual content te find in the spot, and you're impressed da it. You're likely to save this content to your favorites.
Five stars indicates that te think the content is EXCELLENT. It's the best content it could possibly be. Not only do te save this content to your favorites, but te commento favorably on the content, give props to the user who postato the content, and share the link with all your friends, all because te can't help it - it's that good.

Note: The only kind of link te cannot rate (of the four types that are possible to rate) are links that te inviato to the site yourself.
 te can't rate your own content!
You can't rate your own content!
Such content will still mostra te the aggregated ratings from all the other users who've rated it, but where te would normally be able to rate, the five circles are grey.

Common ratings etiquette
While te are not required to do anything with regards to rating, there are a couple of basic etiquette points to consider when rating.

First, be consistent. Determine how te are going to approach ratings and apply those criteria consistently across the site.

Second, explain ratings of a 1 o a 5. If te rate content a 1 o a 5, etiquette insists that te should always provide commenti explaining why it's garbage o why it's awesome, respectively. Without such feedback, the user who postato it (as well as other fanpop users looking at the same content) won't know what it is about the content that they should avoid o try to recreate in future postings. Then they have to guess, and when users have to guess what to do to please you, they're very likely to get it wrong. It becomes like rolling the dice and hoping for double sixes: extreme ratings result in blind gambling if te don't provide comments.

Recommendations for ratings
As I said, te may rate however te like. In addition to the common etiquette considerations above, I offer the following for consideration when te go to rate some content on Fanpop:

The one stella, star and five stella, star ratings represent extremes: the stuff te really despise, and stuff te Amore so much te want to take it home to meet your mom and dad prior to taking your relationship to the successivo level. As such, I recommend that te use either of these ratings sparingly. If everything te rate is at the extremes, it makes your ratings much less meaningful than if te were to rate only a few items at the extreme. Worse still, if many users rate at the extremes (not just you), there can be a situation where most content is either absurdly highly rated o absurdly lowly rated. In such situations, the primary purpose of ratings (#1, at the superiore, in alto of this article) is defeated. Ratings aren't worth spit if crap content, so-so content, and pretty fair content are all rated one star, nor are they worth much if good content, really great content, and the absolute best content ever are all rated five stars.

I encourage you, when rating, to consider ratings as part of a curve, like so:

This is a graph that represents how many of each type of rating is given. Simply stated, most content is likely to deserve three stars. Some content will be significantly better o worse than that, and those rare cases would deserve four o two stars, respectively. One stella, star and five stella, star ratings for content should be really exceptional. Rating with such an approach increases the likelihood that the really, really good content will have the higher ratings, and the really, really bad content will drop to the bottom of the ratings rankings.

How to read ratings
Each type of content that can have a rating shows te the aggregate rating, combining all the ratings of all the fanpop users who've inviato a rating for that content. This number is shown in the green circle, ranging from 1.0 (all raters think it's garbage) to 5.0 (all raters think it's the best thing they've seen). If no one has rated the content, it will appear as a grey cerchio Leggere 0.0.
 Fantastic content? Possibly...
Fantastic content? Possibly...

But the other thing to keep in mind is the number of users who have rated the content. While a 1.0 may indicate the dross of the site and a 5.0 may mean something that te just have to see, they mean little if only one user has rated it. Ratings become più meaningful the più people have rated the content. So content rated 5.0 da 3 fans, while it may be fantastic, isn't necessarily so. It could easily be that the user has Friends who rate the content artificially high. Certainly such content is likely to be less impressive than a 4.3 rated da 120 fans, which is almost certain to be very, very good. Similarly, content rated a 1.7 da 3 fan could be low quality, but it's less certain to be bad than content rated 2.3 da 67 fans.
 Fantastic content? Very likely!

Alright so this is just for a laugh really, what te change isn't permanent anyway, only te cans ee it and when te refresh everything will change to normal again anyway so it s just for a laugh really so I'm going to teach te how to modifica fanpop club for your eyes only, te can have a bit of fun with things te hate o love!

First te will be needing:

Okay, for the past two months I have steadily grown addicted to this website. Maybe it's all the free time I have these days, o maybe it's just I have an addictive personaily. It could of course be that this website is pure brilliance and I constantly think about it. Does that make me sad? No way! Because I can bet I'm not the only one. So here's a checklist of how to know when you've crossed the line between fanpop-addict, and totally-crazy. :)

1. te form an opinion on something and think "I'm going to immediately make a pick about this"...and then the rest of your plan for the giorno goes out...

Hey everyone,

I felt like Scrivere about the constant reposting of icone from livejournal, because I have become a very active lj user in the past months and I know of many lj people who are annoyed as hell to see their icone postato here.

First of all I'd like to say that I did it too. Yes, I took icone that were postato on livejournal and postato them here with credit.
Now te might say: Okay, but if people credit them, why is there a problem? It's not as if the lj people own the original pictures they icon.
This is of course true, but I think it is più about respect and being polite.

To like o not to like? That is the question.

Earlier tonight, the ratings system of fanpop experienced a massive overhaul. No longer can te rate content on a scale of one to five (ala YouTube), but if te like content, te can "like" it (ala Facebook), o "be a fan" of it.

Dave gave a very good, logical explanation for the change to help assuage some fears and answer some questions:

"Hi Guys,

Thanks for making this pick. There are a lot of reasons we wanted to create a new system for deciding whether fan like something o not. We found that most people were rating either 4 o 5 stars so we thought...

 If te must promote a club, try these tips.
If you must promote a club, try these tips.
Re-reading the various articoli about promoting club on Fanpop, it occurred to me that some fairly basic ideas were missing for promoting the club te like (not just the ones te create, but any club te enjoy).

Many of the precedente etiquette articoli and forum threads have described things to avoid in promoting a club, as well as suggestions for things to do. For once, I'm not going to rant about undesirable behavior (that's the plan, anyway), but just keep the focus on other things fan can try to promote their preferito clubs. I hate those darned internet predators, don't you?
I just logged onto fanpop about a half ora fa and discovered something extremely profane and inappropriate on the YouTube spot. Due to it's heavily pornographic material, the video was deleted shortly thanks to several reports from some handy fellow Fanpoppers.

It was inviato da a user of the name bon8699. I reported this user 3 times and I expect him to be banned for a long, long time.

The reason I am so annoyed that this was inviato is that this is not some pornography site. And this is most certaintly not NewGrounds, where te can invia immagini like this as much as te please without...

I swear to whatever higher power te believe in that I am going to injure someone with all the shoddy spelling going around. Yes abbreviations are easier (in a sense) but it looks like a 5 anno old wrote it and a lot of people don't understand it. So lets first go over some abbreviations that we should cut out of our vocabulary here at fanpop when te post content...

u = you
r = are
srs = serious
2 = to o too (using it as "two" is fine)
plz = please

If te actually take that .5 of a secondo to type the whole word people will look at your content, commento and such a lot più and with nicer comments...

I am not here to lecture te yet again on foto crediting. I am done with that.

I am way past the lecturing and into downright grrrrrr-ville.

te already know full well that taking something te did not create and not giving full credit to the owner is theft. Your excuses mostly boil down to laziness at this point.

So.

This is my public notice that any and all immagini with no credit to the original owner of the image will be rated harshly no matter how great the picture is... o how much I normally like you.

Additionally, if there is a blatant Copyright notice right there on the damn picture and te still failed to credit the owner, I'm reporting it to fanpop -and- notifying the owner of the image that te ha rubato, stola it.

Enough is enough.

Right, well the titolo is a bit sarcastic. The whole "trolling" thing is sorta annoying me that having a low rate on something HAS to mean te were trolled...well maybe there's a different reason. I'll break it up to why that might not have been a trolling...

Soapboxes
- Did te use proper grammar? Check your spelling
- What's a paragraph? Learn how to use paragraphs properly to make your soapbox formatted and not look like a 1 stella, star article

Yes, I am fired up again over another issue of cruelty here on Fanpop... specifically the practice of passing judgment on other users.
    Let's face it, we do not know each other personally, and for the most part none of us have ever met in real life. I think it is cruel and sad that people find it necessary to try to judge the intentions o actions of others. How could anyone possibly judge another person o their actions without knowing them personally o knowing the things they are going through. te could not possibly say what te would do in their situation without...

Okay, I don't know if it's just coincidence but I noticed this week that some picks just are, I don't quite know how to describe it, bad.

It just seems that a lot of picks are asked so that they are asked, a lot of them don't have pictures. (that's not very important but I can't help noticing)
But the worst thing is that there are so many typos in the questions. Look, my English is not very good, I make a lot of mistakes but al least I try to make as less as possible. I mean, a lot of domande are just so wrong, the 'preview' thing that te get when you've finished making your pick is there...

A few minuti fa I thought of a partial answer to the recente outbreak of internet trolls we've had over the last few moths.

Ladies and Gentlepoppers, I introduce to you:

The ATSOF (The Anti Troll Squad Of Fanpop)
This will be a society of fanpoppers who work together to justly rate any content which has (without reason) been rated low.

My plan is to make an ATSOF Spot; if a spot o particular piece of content has been rated low te can alert the ATSOF spot about this and some of the "fans" of the spot will head over to the content and rate the content fairly, therefore boosting the rating.

Please tell me what te think; I don't want to create a Ghost-Spot-to-be

If we make a new spot we want to make it popular. Recently I made a new spot so when I wanted to send a message to all my Friends about it I got tired of typing individual messages so I quit. So we should be able to send one message to all our Friends at the same time if necessary. Also there should be an area that says "new spots" on the home page so that people can see what has been recently created and if they want to unisciti the particular spot. It would really make the people who created the spots happy because they could get some good publicity.

da the way I made a new spot about Kal Penn, the indian guy from the furgone, van wilder movies, Harold and Kumar go to white castle, and Epic Movie.

So if u like those Film check it out. all te have to do is type "Kal Penn" in the cerca engine" (obviously, I know)

Also this soapbox was ment for the fanpop spot
