Ghostbusters (2016) Do te wish the movie would've explicitly stated that Holtzmann is a lesbian?

Gorgeous icons by Dasm.

I'm annoyed that the studio wouldn't let them state it. I mean, it was kind of obvious when she was flirting with Erin, but STILL. Representation is important.

I've already seen manbabies crying online how it's not fair that "the hot one" is gay. Mwahahaah. Love that this movie is continuously crushing all of their fantasies.

Hm...

I don't think it was necessary, because nobody but Erin seemed interested in hooking up with anyone.

But it's lame that the studio won't let them say anything about it.

I've also seen a fair amount of man-baby tears over Kate. As if those losers ever had a chance. Pfft.

That's true. It wouldn't have really been necessary since there wasn't really any romance in the movie (which I loved. Focus on the ghosts and the friendships pls and ty), but I'm mainly just annoyed since they got pushback from the studio. If the studio would've been cool with it and instead Paul was like "Jillian is a lesbian but we didn't feel it was necessary to state" that would've been fine with me. But nope. The studio preventing it is what bothers me.

I am torn on this. On the one hand, yes, more on-screen out lesbians, please. On the other hand, many writers and creators want their characters to be relatable enough that you can project whatever sexuality you want onto them (ala Mark Hamil's open opinion on Luke Skywalker's sexuality), which is also kind of nice. This way, Holtzman could be lesbian, bisexual, asexual, or anything in between. Better than forcing her to drop hetero-hints or something.

Before seeing the movie and reading that interview where they couldn't bring themselves to state Holtzmann's sexuality, I think I was on the fence with the issue. Like Cinders already said, it's cool when characters' orientations aren't explicitly given because then viewers can headcanon her as whatever sexuality they choose.

That said, after seeing the way she so obviously hits on Erin, it's the logic (or lack of) behind the studio censorship that leaves me baffled. Even if they hadn't outright mentioned the word "lesbian" (as in, she could be bisexual or pansexual for all we know), I think they should have at least been able to expicitly state that Holtzmann is attracted to women.

I also don't recall anything about Abby or Patty's sexuality being mentioned? Erin is shown to be attracted to Kevin, and Holtzmann is clearly crushing on Erin, but at least that would have still left two Ghostbusters whose orientations could be interpreted by the viewers in any way they wanted.
