It deals with death and murder, there's violence, there are a ton of mature themes, Dumbledore is hinted to be gay by JK Rowling, kids are orphaned at an extremely young age, and Voldemort was based on Hitler.
How on earth can anyone say Harry Potter is just for kids?

It's not something I've heard said myself. But it's blatantly wrong. As JKR pointed out herself when asked about the series getting darker, it starts off with a double murder.
