Their second spouses they loved of course but not like the true eternal love they had/have for eachother. I think maybe Lucy jumped the shark, cause she had a drinking problem while he had a philandering problem, if they worked out those issues they could have avoided a divorce, cause it was kind of obvious to everyone they were still in love and wanted to be together.
