I feel like with that one it's sort of process of elimination -- the other options are he's cheating on Ana (which, technically he still is, in this headcanon, but at least he has some sort of justification), Ana's dead/Will thinks she's dead, or they've broken up for whatever reason. And then there was that scene where Will was sketchily looking around Gold's shop after Belle left and he thought he was alone... I feel like that's the direction the writers were going to go with it if they hadn't dropped the storyline entirely. I think Will felt awful about it, but he tried to justify his actions by reasoning that Belle was using him too, just in a different way than he was her.
