Ace's passing was really sad and I really didn't want to see him go and the way he did was just really sad.

At the end of the day, his death provided a good turn for the storyline and pushed for Luffy to become stronger. In saying that, Ace is my second favorite character, so obviously I still hated the fact that he died, even if it benefitted the story.

I think what characterizes any good series is purposeful and meaningful death. BP addressed this part, but there's more to it than that. An author's willingness to kill off beloved characters shows a commitment to good story telling, regardless of the fan base. The idea of sacred cows in anime has been pervasive in the big 3, and it's a pleasure to see One Piece take a huge step away from that with Ace's death. I'm tired of the Deus Ex Machina used to keep minor characters alive in Bleach and the massive reversals in Naruto, so like it or not, Oda's showing himself to be above the silliness by doing this.

Frankly speaking it wasn't a big event to me.

Well, I choose no, not no as in no I didnt like ace, no as in something dramatic had to happen.. Luffy wouldnt be this way now if Ace hadnt died... After the timeskip Luffy has become more mature and stronger because of the incident.

I really love Ace and became quite attached to him after hearing more of his past. He's a precious sweetheart. <3 I don't really have negative feelings about his death I mean sure it was really sad and I did cry a little but, in the end it was good for the story among other things that were already mentioned by Panther and Flame. I do wish he was still around but, in the end it's a benefit to the story so, I'm fine with it.
