My opinion : Agree and disagree at the same time. I agree that Leyton's bond is by far really complex and it's really something special you have to understand.
However, I don't necessarly think that you need to go through something similar to understand them. I've been through some similar things to both of the characters but still I didn't have the same love story and still understand perfectly their bond !

They do have a really complex story which is why I think the fans of the show are so split on them. You either love them or you hate them. But you don't have to go through a similar situation to love them.
