TMI TV Tuesday: Three Things We Want to See in ‘The Mortal Instruments’ TV Show
On Tuesdays, TMI Source and Fangirlish are bringing you TMI TV Tuesdays, where we discuss different aspects regarding the upcoming television adaptation of
With any adaptation there is guaranteed change as the source material is translated into another medium. In our case, Cassandra Clare’s
have already been translated from book to film, and now Constantin is giving it another go with a book to television adaptation.
While it’s important to understand that change is not only guaranteed but necessary in an adaptation, there are some things that as fans we really,
Here are three (of many) things that we’re hoping to see in some form or another in
be a not-so faithful adaptation to Cassandra Clare’s beloved books I don’t know if fans could take it again if the same thing happened with the TV series. This is my way of once again stressing the importance that the TV show do the opposite of what the movie did, which is take liberties with the material that actually altered the story. As far as remaining faithful to the source material, show runner Ed Decter need only understand the importance of the Shadowhunter world and culture, as well as the characters and their unique personalities and how that contributes overall to the story. When I say faithful I don’t mean every single detail from every single book in the series be included (because that show would last for 20 years, not that I’d complain), but it’s important with adaptations that one recognize what is integral to the story.
When you’re adapting a book series to a different medium there are certain aspects of it that you cannot change because, well, it’s integral to the series as a whole. So, incest is a sore subject, understandable. Sure, it might be intimidating to take on handling the way a plot like that plays out, but that’s all in the fun of being a show runner, right? It certainly helps when the problem’s already solved in the books themselves. But it’s a huge theme throughout the first three
books (spoiler alert: they learn they’re not related). Hey, if
When you have a world as diverse and expansive as that of Cassandra Clare’s
, there are plenty of opportunities for crossovers between books and connections between characters, as evidenced by the interconnectivity of the Shadowhunter families within her series. So as we head into the television adaptation, I’m hoping that we’ll get a little tease of these other series. Now this doesn’t need to be immediate — I’m not expecting to hear the mention of Will Herondale in the pilot — but it’d be nice down the line if we’d get little Easter Eggs of important characters from
etc. As a comics fan I relish in those Easter Eggs in television and movies. If Clare’s books have proved anything it’s that the possibilities are endless when it comes to Shadowhunters. And this is gold to a showrunner.
There are endless things that we’d like to see in the show, so we might end up doing more.
Head over to FANGIRLISH to read their three things they
TV show, and check back on Tuesdays for TMI TV TUESDAYS.
What are your thoughts? What are some of the essential things you need to see in the show?

Something essential I need to see in the TV Show is Sebastian/Jonathan. God, I know many people doesn’t like him, but I do, I really like him :)
I would definitely down the line, like to see more of Alec’s and Magnuss relationship portrayed on a TV screen. Also I would like to see more of Alec in general, as I like how hostile he is to Clary and how closed off in general he is in the first book.
Yes more Alec, and definitely more screentime for Magnus and Alec. The book didn’t let you see their relationship grow all too much, but the tvserie has a real change of seeing them date, sneak around and have real important talks.
I agree. The sibling relationship was presented as a lie suggested by Hodge in the movie. Totally missing out on CClary and Jaces anguish.
That’s how I feel! My whole family was like I thought you said they were brother and sister @_@
It would be cool to see some scenes based on The Bane Chronicles.
Yeah, especially since one of the Bane Chronicles stories actually deals, even if it is slightly and vaguely relevant, with Magnus and Jocelyn’s first meeting.
Having the spin-offs, crossovers, prequels, sequels, and short stories integrated into the TV series would go a long way with making a faithful adaptation.
Most certainly the incest plot of things and I agree that if Game of Thrones has made it this far, so can TMI. It’d also be neat, as Thalia stated, to see a few TBChronicles scenes in as well as a bit more Malec <3
But, my MAIN thing I REALLY WANT in the tv adaptation is the Parabatai concept. It NEEDS to be there if you ask me to show the depth of the relationship that Jace and Alec really have ( besides, we need the "I am not your bitch" line too..LOL ) , and if it gets that far and we get TID at some point, Will and Jem of course.
Sorry, I just love the whole concept and it means a lot to me considering I have a parabatai myself and it was one thing we were really looking forward to in the movie, but it was never really there…though the scene of Alec killing the vampire that Jace was struggling with was still good.
I would love to see the show more based on the book. I watched the movie before I read the book and I am a little disappointed that the movie didn’t have much of the book in it. I feel like the way they present Jace isn’t very much like the book. They should definitely make Jace a little more like he is supposed to be in the book. Especially with the good eyes!!
I’m not to sure how I feel that it’s becoming a show. I was upset that they kinda ruined the incest part, (That was a main piece for me) But This post is so true. Ii hope it doesn’t fail twice XD
I agree with everything ^^ and also, we need to fix the Valentine & Sebastian relationship/resemblance. Valentine is known for his white-blond hair so why was it black?!??! Also, MORE SIZZY, CLACE AND MALEC!! But I reckon they’ll do a great job :)
i hope they show every thing the book had the love the heart break the betrayal. the movie was a huge let down the characters per say wern’t the problem some people say they were i no there was a few flaws: Jace’s eye colour, clarys and valentines hair colour but doest mean we should get rid of them the problem was the plot the b est thing to do is try again but stick to the book a bit more i agree with the others there should be a little more Malec, Clace, Sizzy (and in a few seosons) Jaia!!!!!:D :D :D :D :D
I hope there’s an open call for extras for this series! If they film it in Toronto again, I am game!!
i honestly dont care what happens in the tv series as long as they fix alec! i mean in the movie he was the most freaking booring character… there was none of his adorable insecure and wary yet feircely loyal and protective personality at all… or how he changes after meeting magnus. that is literally my favorite part of the books and the tv series had better do a better job of showing it than the movie
sorry i wasnt intending to start ranting, but i am devoted to alec
