It was called Fangirlish | #TMITuesdays: We’re Begging – Know Your Fandom
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
#TMITuesdays: We’re Begging – Know Your Fandom
Do you want to know where a lot of Hollywood movie and television screw up? They take the fans for granted.
No, I am not kidding. I know that most of you go online and you see a website that you love has gotten the opportunity to do something you want – and I get it – you are like, “How did they do that?”
Let me tell you how. A lot of hard work. A lot of reading, stalking the internet, a lot of learning how to live without sleep, and making sure you got a PHD in Fandom’s – even though it’s a course that isn’t offered.
I don’t mean to sound egotistical – but I know way too much about Fandom’s. I can tell you too much about everything from
I can tell you one thing that successful fandom’s have had in common – they involved their fans. I can also tell you where the other one’s failed – they didn’t on the same level.
Quite honestly, some fandoms do the superficial – you give a fan site limited access, you make them something special, and you think they are going to do whatever you want. And we do.
But there are something’s that people don’t get – a fandom needs to be involved behind the scenes. And the need to be listened to. And that is something a lot of people in Hollywood take for granted.
I had a conversation with a producer once who told me that they knew everything about their property. I looked at them and smiled –asking, “But do you know the fandom?”
You can read a book, script, watch a movie – but none of that matters if you didn’t know the fandom. And I am not talking when the movie is made or the television show was filmed, I am talking when it’s optioned. I am talking when you are making the decision.
You need to know the influencers, the passages that matter, the quotes that need to be repeated, the actors that fans want to have. You have everything that you need to make a hit. Only what I have learned in doing this is that Hollywood seems to think that there is one formula for making a YA Hit.
Every property is unique. And quite honestly, no one knows what it takes more than a fandom.
Fans are not idiots. We’re actually one of the most undertapped resources out there. Our opinions are taken for granted.
But I am not here to tell you about it all. It’s TMI Tuesday’s and I am here to tell you why I want whomever picks this television show up – don’t be dumb. You need to access the fandom. You need to listen to the people that know the property. And I am sorry – the director of the TMI Movie didn’t have a clue as to what The Mortal Instruments property was. He knew what he wanted it to be.
Shadowhunter’s are not just a name. They are not just fans. They are passionate fans. And what is needed for whomever picks up this show needs is a good old fashioned fan “book slapper” that tells someone what they are doing wrong, what they are doing right, and keeps them involved with the fandom.
You are given a road map to a fandom succeeding – the book that it is based off of. You are given a tour guide – the fandom. Don’t be dumb and not use the resources that are laid out there for you.
And I say this with love and hope that you listen – whomever you are. I know this fandom, and I am asking that you listen to it – in order to save it.

THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!!! OMG PLEASE HOLLYWOOD LISTEN!!!!!!
LISTEN TO YOUR AUDIENCE!!!! THEY’RE THE ONES WHO ARE GOING TO SUPPORT THE FILM/TV SHOW AND WHO YOU ARE MAKING THIS FOR!!! THEY WILL BUILD THE FANBASE!!!! THEY WILL ADVERTISE IT FOR FREE IF THEY THINK IT’S WORTH IT!!!!
Marketing has evolved, film and tv expectations and interaction has evolved, now Hollywood just needs to evolve so it doesn’t lose all it’s consumers.
WHY throw time and money at a project that _should_ be a slam dunk with a readymade audience??
Luckily, not all producers are oblivious. Ron Moore took Diana Gabladon’s ‘Outlander’ series and found an instant hit. Just about everyone involved in the project is a fan of the _book_. They’ve involved the author _and_ the fandom (and after 20 years in print, it’s quite large and international )…and _keep_ the fandom involved. Ron proved that he understood the story. He honoured the story. He won the fans’ trust – and we know that when the script has at any point veered from the book, it does so without losing the essence of the story.
STARZ was smart enough to see the potential in a readymade audience. Outlander was picked up for a second season after one episode! Because the fandom was behind the show from the beginning.
Agreed. But the same people that were behind the movie are behind the show – and they didn’t listen to the fans. So we’re hoping that the studio that picks it up, does.
