My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My Amore as deep; the più I give to thee,

Chapter 1 – Midnight Hunt
Tomorrow was my birthday.
I was turning eighteen, according to Grandpa Carlisle. It was the age that marked the start of adulthood—also the age that I’d finally stop growing after six and a half long years of rapid growth spurts. I was ecstatic for the event. At last I was going to stop aging like the rest of my family and close friends.
It was about time.
I pondered about this as I walked through the forest with my life-long friend Jacob da my side and my parents, Edward and Bella, holding hands and walking behind us. There was no need to walk faster than human walking speed at the moment—there was no rush when te could live forever. We were on a mid-night hunting trip; it was something that we had never tried before. I took in deep breaths of the night’s fresh, crisp air, breathing in the pine smell of the trees and the natural scent of the forest.
We strolled on, bathed in the full moon’s bright light. I was aware of all the movements around me on this unusual clear, still night. Edward and Bella were swinging their hands as they walked. successivo to me, Jacob was glancing at our surroundings like I was, intrigued at how the white light of the moon made everything seem to give off a gentle radiance, giving all things around us a rather dreamy aura. I was also observant of all the animali in the forest— even the ones that were so tiny that an ordinary human would not be able to spot from a distance.
My extreme, excessive senses were only just one of the great tricks about being half-vampire.
I was just about to gaze up at the moon and admire its brilliance right when I smelled a familiar, warm, appealing essence.
It was the very scent of my preferito animal to hunt—mountain lion. It was the same preferito as my father’s. Even though I didn’t enjoy the taste of animal blood so much compared to the sweet taste of human blood, I still tolerated it, and it was better than nothing. The “vegetarian” style of the Vampiri#From Dracula to Buffy... and all creatures of the night in between. was a respectable way of our life that us Cullens chose to follow.
By the smell of this mountain lion, it was a big one. Bigger than the ones that I ever caught, that was for sure.
I stopped walking and closed my eyes, taking in the scent of the animal, listening for its thumping cuore beat. I could tell that the others had noticed the strong aroma of the beast as well. Edward, Bella, and Jacob all stopped. Jacob was not a half-vampire like I was— o a full vampire like my parents were for that matter. He was part wolf—a shape-shifter. I never found his ability to change into an enormous, russet lupo whenever he pleased something unnatural. I had grown up with him my whole life. Since he was half-wolf, he couldn’t age like the vampires. I felt a sense of comfort at this thought. He was going to be da my side forever as my closest, dearest friend.
He heard the lion too. He chuckled his deep, throaty chuckle. “It sounds like a big one, doesn’t it, Nessie?”
I nodded at his question, not wanting to open my eyes to throw off my concentration.
“Too bad I’m going to get to it first!” he taunted, laughter still in his voice.
My eyes snapped open at those words. My Cioccolato brown eyes gleamed with excitement at the new challenge Jacob was portraying. A smirk curved on my lips.
“You’re wrong, Jake,” I detto in a smooth voice. “Everybody knows that Vampiri#From Dracula to Buffy... and all creatures of the night in between. are faster than werewolves.”
He smiled at me, his white teeth glittering against the moonlight. “Prove it.”
At an amazing, inhuman speed I took off running, following the lion scent. Trees, plants, and everything that I passed seemed to blur da me. I was shocked when I saw that Jacob was at the same speed as I was. He was in his gigantic lupo form, concentrating on the scent as well. I looked at him for a fraction of a second, and that was my mistake. Even though he distracted me for only less than a second, he picked up in speed in that much time and raced ahead of me. My playful mood changed into a strong competitive one as soon as he did this, with now clear understanding that there was a chance that I would be defeated.
I ran even faster da instinct, my total concentration on the warm fragrance of the animal. I allowed my body to drift with the scent; my body moved on its own, and I merely noticed its motions as it kept shifting and choosing different paths in the woods.
It wasn’t long before I found the animal. My senses were correct before—this mountain lion was a big one. There was just a little problem.
Jacob was already there.
He had beaten me.
I looked at him, my eyes wide with shock. A sense of failure rushed through my body and for the first time in a long time I felt weak. The beast was caught in between his front, heavy paws. It was struggling, but it was no match for Jacob’s strength. I stood there, silently sulking, as I watched Jacob snap its neck with his jaws.
“Well, I guess licantropi can run faster than Vampiri#From Dracula to Buffy... and all creatures of the night in between. after all,” I said, a smile on my face. I giggled, trying to lighten the mood. It worked a little bit, and all of a sudden I was happy for Jake that he won our little game, my brief aspro, acida thought that I had before was now vanished.
To my surprise, Jacob looked up at me with his big, dark eyes and dropped his kill down. At his action I felt a pang of guilt. I shouldn’t have detto anything.
“No, Jake. Eat the lion. You’re the deserving winner,” I told him.
He continued looking at me for a few seconds. Then he stood up from the ground he was lying on and bowed his head at the feline, nudging it toward me.
“Seriously, Jake. I’m fine,” I protested, but he continued to nudge it toward me until it was at my feet. He stood up on his hind legs, looking down at me; he must’ve been at least a foot over my height when he stood up. I sighed and placed my hand on the superiore, in alto of his head, his pelliccia was soft and yet maybe a little rough. With my gift, I showed him a picture of him eating the lion in his head. I tried to bring out the details too such as the deliciousness of it and how full and happy he became afterwards.
All of a sudden Jacob pushed into me playfully, his tongue hanging out the side of his open mouth. My connection with him was broken and I giggled at him. He continued to nudge me in a frolicsome manner, my laughter increasing.
“Jake!” I giggled. “Whoa!”
Without warning he swept me off of my feet and half my body slid on his back and my lower half dangled in the air.
“Put me down Jacob!” I ordered, still laughing.
He made a sound as though he was trying to chuckle in his lupo form.
At last he set me back down on my feet. I wiped my eyes, trying to get rid of a few tears that had leaked out. A few leftover giggles escaped my lips as I tried to pull myself together. After a few deep breaths I looked around, noticing that Jacob was no longer in front of me.
“Jacob?” I called out, whirling around, searching through the moonlit darkness. He was no where to be found. “Jac—”
“Nessie I’m right here,” I heard his voice speak from behind me.
I spun back around, gasping. “Goodness! te scared me!”
He laughed. “I just went into the woods for a few seconds, Ness. I wanted to change back into a human. da the way, the lion is yours. Happy birthday.”
I smiled at him. “Thanks.”
“No problem.”
I crouched down to the animal, taking the bloody kill into my arms. I thought about nothing else as my teeth sank into its body; Jake ruined the appetizing, warm neck da snapping it off. It still tasted great anyway. The blood was fresh, not too hot nor too cold. It was sweet, but not as sweet as human blood, in which I had to feast on when I was a young child, but only out of pouches that Carlisle retrieved for me since he was a doctor. The blood had a slight wild edge to it, which was the only downside of it. The wild taste of animali was one of the reasons that I didn’t care much for hunting them.
Once I drained the animal, I dropped it and stood back up. I smiled at Jacob and he smirked back.
“Was it good? That took te a little while,” he asked.
I nodded. “It was the best animal I’ve tasted yet.”
“You have a little something on your…” His voice trailed off as he reached his hand up to my face. With his large thumb, he ever so gently traced my bottom lip. I just looked into his eyes, unsure of what he was doing until he pulled his thumb away and showed me that he had delicately scraped some blood that had been left on my lip. I made a face as though I was a child who was just caught eating a cookie before dinnertime.
“Oops,” I uttered, and once più Jacob laughed. He was in a good mood tonight. He wiped the extra blood on his shorts.
“There te two are!” I heard Bella’s voice from behind me. I turned around and saw that she and Edward had caught up to us.
“Only a few miles più up north and te two would’ve been in Canada,” Edward told us, a smirk on his face.
Bella laughed her musical laugh as she leaned into Edward’s shoulder. I giggled also.
“Maybe successivo time, Dad,” I told him. “Did te guys catch anything on the way?”
“No,” he replied in his smooth voice. “There isn’t a large variety of animali at twelve in the morning, are there?”
“No, not really,” I agreed. I looked to Jacob who was now standing beside me. It was then I noticed how tired he was. He had a dark cerchio under each eye and his face looked a little on the droopy side. He began to yawn.
“Oh no, Jake! I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought te out here in the middle of the night like this. te look exhausted,” I said.
“Don’t worry about it, Nessie. I’m fine. This isn’t the longest I’ve been up. Besides, shouldn’t te be tired too?” He gave me a questioning look. Even though I was part vampire, I still slept like the humans. And truth be told, at that moment I was very sleepy. I wasn’t before I had drunk the animal blood, but the sense of being full must have contributed to my low energy level. I didn’t want to admit that I was weary. I loved being out under the moonlight with my loved ones. I didn’t want to go back. Unfortunate for me, it was at that moment when my body decided to betray me, and I yawned in front of everybody displaying that I was indeed tired. My eyes widened and my hands flew up to my mouth.
“Ha, ha,” Jacob snickered. “I was right. Don’t try to cover it up, Nessie. te should be tired from that lion.”
“Maybe we should go back to the cottage and let Renesmee sleep,” Bella suggested, eyeing me.
I took my hand away from my lips and my eyes turned to their regular size. “No, Mom. Really, I’m fine.”
“HA!” Jacob laughed. “So she says.”
I gave him a teasing scowl.
“Besides,” Jacob continued, “your little birthday get-together is later on today. te might want to get some sleep.”
As if to prove his point even more, my body chose to yawn once again. I sighed, giving up. “I suppose you’re right.”
“We’ll take her back, Jacob,” Edward said. “You should go back to your pack.”
“Wait,” I blurted out. I felt Jacob’s eyes on me but he detto nothing. I proceeded, “Don’t te guys want to find at least an elk before we go home? te know…since Grandpa Charlie is coming over?”
I adored my human grandfather Charlie and his need-to-know attitude concerning the truth about me and the rest of my vampire family. He did not know that we were vampires, but he did have his suspicions, and refused to know what we truly were. It was better for him that way anyhow. Though he did know about the shape shifters, and even disallowed any più information to be told about them even though he had known about them for a little less than seven years.
Although it was true that I was looking out for Charlie, I had just blurted out the fact that he was mostrare up in a house full of not well-fed Vampiri#From Dracula to Buffy... and all creatures of the night in between. as an excuse to hang around Jacob more.
“You know that he is perfectly sicuro, cassetta di sicurezza coming to our house, Nessie,” Edward pointed out. “But I suppose te are right. It never hurts to do some extra hunting.” He looked to Jacob. “Will te take her home?”
“No prob,” Jacob agreed, smiling at me. I couldn’t help but smile back.
Bella looked at me. “We’ll see te when we get home. I Amore you,” she told me.
“I Amore te too, Mom,” I said.
She gave me a weak smile as though she was unsure if she wanted to go on without me, but then in less than a secondo her and Edward took off running through the dark forest. Now Jacob and I were alone together.
“Time to get te home,” he detto to me.
In one quick movement he grabbed me and slung me over his shoulder. I didn’t even feel surprised at all that time as my body rested on Jacob’s unnaturally hot shoulder.
“Oh, Jake,” I moaned. “You really know how to annoy a girl, don’t you?”
I felt a chuckle rumble through his chest. “That’s why I’m here. No, but seriously, feel free to fall asleep on me. But you’ll be home in no time.”
“I don’t think that’s possible, Jake,” I told him. “I mean, to fall asleep on you.”
“You’d be surprised,” he said, still chuckling.
It was then that he took off running in fast speeds; he was almost as quick as Edward was when he ran. My long, bronze curls whipped in front of my face as the forest seemed to rush da me. The chilly night air lashed across my face as well, and it felt soothing and pleasant rather than something that should feel discomforting. Soon my face was as chilly as the air around me and my body was heated from Jacob’s scorching skin from under me. The two very different temperatures on my skin didn’t feel awkward as I thought it would be, and leaning against Jacob’s soft, muscular body was extremely comforting. Jacob, once again, was right after all. It would be easy to fall asleep in this position.
When I felt myself begin to slip into sleep, Jacob slowed down to a stop. I opened my eyes all the way and looked at my surroundings. It took me a few secondi to take in that I was already in the cottage in my bedroom. In a gentle manner, Jacob took me off of his shoulder and placed me down.
“Well,” he muttered, “g’night, Nessie. I’ll see te when te wake up.”
“Okay,” I murmured, my voice thick with drowsiness. Jacob gave me a weak smile and started to exit my bedroom.
“Tell the pack that I detto ‘hi’,” I told him, returning his smirk.
“Sure, sure,” he said, turning around for a secondo to mostra me that he was smirking his classic half-smile.
Once he left I put on my preferito cotton pajamas and crawled into bed. I was excited for later on today. I loved being around my family; they always made me feel blissful. I fell asleep almost right away, about to slip into a nightmare…
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My Amore as deep; the più I give to thee,
The più I have, for both are infinite.
