Jeremy Renner Suits Up As Hawkeye For ‘Avengers 2′ Poster
Not unlike Bruce Banner a.k.a. The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Marvel’s greatest marksman, Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has so far remained exclusive to
movies. Both had cameo appearances in other films (Hawkeye in
post-credits scene) but their stories have remained exclusively in the hands of writer and director Joss Whedon. We’re not counting the Ed Norton/Louis Leterrier
Whedon did wonders in turning Hulk into a fan-favorite with how he was utilized in
movie, but for Hawkeye (Renner also signed for a potential solo
film), it’s been a less stellar ride. Renner came in to meet for the role of Hawkeye over nearly five years ago, but the character he was pitched, the one he even discussed with Whedon did not make it to the screen…
Instead, due to script changes, Hawkeye became a pawn in Loki’s evil schemes. That meant for most of
, Hawkeye was a mindless drone under the control of the villain, and when he wasn’t, it was all mainly just action sequences. The character’s backstory, personality and development was largely left out. Worse, Hawkeye is the only character who didn’t even get a cameo appearance throughout Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Hawkeye did almost get an epic action sequence in
though, as directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained to us on the SR Underground podcast, but scheduling conflicts prevented it from happening. Instead, Barton returns for
in a role that made Robert Downey Jr. describe him as a “rockstar.”
Last week, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson all took to their social media platforms to release new official
Avengers 2 character posters for Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor and Nick Fury, and continuing the pattern, Hawkeye – one of the core six

Oddly enough, in this poster the winter background represents the opening sequence of the film where Hawkeye will be wearing his new, long-sleeved costume (pictured below). Here he’s instead wearing his standard outfit as seen in
. Someone’s going to have cold arms wielding that bow…
The poster also depicts Renner using the bow with his right hand instead of his left, hinting that the character’s ambidexterity will be showcased in the sequel. In the comics, the archer can use both hands with equal skill. Hence, the quiver on his left shoulder but the bowstring in his right hand.
one-sheet for Chris Evans as Captain America, and after that it’ll be time for the new characters: Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). But that’s not all! Last week we posted a lengthy and in-depth interview with Chris Hemsworth from the set of

Marvel may debut a brand new trailer for the sequel tomorrow during the midseason premiere of

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.

This is what I’m talking about. Hawkeye is the real star of the MCU
can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or if you really hold that hilarious belief lol.
Renner was so utterly useless and a complete charismatic abyss as Hawkeye in avengers. I actually like hawkeye of the comics but in the movies you gotta admit he could easily be replaced by a bowl of oat meal and no one would notice.
First off, awesome poster….. Secondly, I have a sneaking suspicion that Hawkeye will die in this movie.
All Whedon’s talk about death and a character dying… Plus not seeing him attached to CA:CW.. I’m feeling he won’t make it out alive.
Uhmmm… not trying to rain on your parade, but wasn’t he already rumored to be a part of Civil War?
Can anyone tell me exactly how/why we care about this character and how he made it onto The Avengers team?
As a former Marvel fanboy in the early 80s I read a ton of books. However, Hawkeye held zero interest. I don’t recall his origin or back-story back then but if I’m right in what we saw in THE AVENGERS, he’s a guy who can shoot arrows pretty accurately.
As mentioned in the story above he wasn’t explored much in THE AVENGERS so I’m clear there.
When you think about A God, a billionaire with an amazing armored suit that can fly and shoot lazers, the world’s strongest monster/beast who’s also one of the world’s great scientists and a female spy who can kick butt – I get it. But a guy who’s good with shooting arrows?
It feels like he’s so “unimportant” (compared to the others) that they worked him into the first one as a pawn just to give him something to do.
In the comics themselves, what was his role? Did he do anything special? Or was he just another Star Trek Red Shirt character put there to be put in danger and give the other Avengers someone to save?
Before getting flamed and told to “look things up” I just did.
But it doesn’t answer the question about why he’s an Avenger or what purpose he serves on the team.
He’s the “sniper” of the team. That gives you his “functionality” background. Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, even Cap & Widow are all big-time heavy-hitters (with the exception of Widow, who is a more field-stealth agent). On Ultimate Marvel, where the Avengers are basically the public-faced, “super-powered” response team working with SHIELD and for the US Govt., Fury enlists his best spy-agents, with Widow and Hawkeye being the top-dogs, to act as “sleeper agents” and as a sort of undercover black-ops Avengers. Their membership had been kept under-wraps, and both Widow and Hawkeye had a ton of experience having faced super-powered metas like the Hulk and Wolverine, so they had a lot to give to the team.
I think those reasons alone suffice for his membership on the team. What say you 10-center?
I’m not sure a better explanation could be given.
Not every hero has power and not every hero in a superhero team will appeal to everybody…just watch the movie for Iron Man or the Hulk…why getting upset about a character that doesnt interest you…..and doesn’t even make the movie good nor bad if he is in it or not.
And just because you looked up 1 thing…yes 1 thing. It doesnt mean its cleared up. Maria Hill has no superpowers but still important. So is Nick Fury. He is on the team because the team needs hero’s…because Nick Fury believes in hero’s like he said in The Avengers.
Well, by that logic, even Captain America has only been in Avengers movies, if you dont count the two captain america movies…
Somehow I think that the “Play” button on the YT screen has the same visual effect as the arc-reactor on Tony’s chest. I’m sure that the guy who shot this was aware of that visual tidbit.
Hawkeye is like Green Arrow if you stripped out the personality.
Which means that TONY STARK is the Green Arrow of the Marvel Universe, with the personality and the comics-depicting-substance-abuse and Cold War-politics. Hrmm. I guess that makes Hawkeye ARSENAL. Oh no wait, that’s WAR-MACHINE (naming and all). THEA er I mean SPEEDY then?
Green Arrow is more like Batman if you strip out the cool.
If Marvel is going with the young Peter Parker for the new Spiderman movies, I think Hawkeye should be its supporting character. It gives Renner something to do and it helps an inexperienced Peter Parker. Just a thought.
Oh I can’t wait to see what they do with this character. How do they get from the last film to “Rockstar”? Well they have him twirling drum sticks and Renner is a drummer and a singer and a guitarist and a pianist, so maybe they really will have him being rockstar. I don’t think they will kill him off, but he looks a bit sad in that poster. I think they are really going to put him through the shreader and if he has a family, I don’t rate their chances.
Hawkeye is THE most boring comic book character ever brought to the silver screen.
I’m willing to bet a large sum of money you’ve not read the latest Hawkeye series which won an Eisner Award.
That solo series was more than just fun to read, it was well written and shaped him as the least boring comic book character in the Marvel Comic Universe.
That solo series is not only great, it’s among my favorite Marvel comic lineup I’m reading right now (sad that it’s ending soon). Anyone who reads that would definitely not say that he’s a boring character IMHO.
What does that have to do with the boring as day old milk movie version?
Elliot, that question confuses me given the comment specifying “boring comic book character” (not movie) and my article explaining the problem with the character in the first movie. You’re killing me, Elliot.
Rob, I love the article and I really want to see what Whedon can do this time. I am a bit worried that his attention will be focused on Black Widow and any character development for Barton will be used primarily to help flesh out her story, but Marvel are clearly working to keep his issues and recent whereabouts spoiler free, so maybe there really is something worth hiding. I do know that the more dramatic and demanding a role the better Renner’s performance, so hopefully they have made his life hell.
“If not today, tomorrow will see the release of an Avengers: Age of Ultron one-sheet for Chris Evans as Captain America”
It’ll come tomorrow via Evans’ twitter feed, Sam L Jackson posted all three at once because:
1. ScarJo and Hemsworth don’t have (officially known public) Twitter/Social Media accounts
2. Their posters were meant to go out in Saturday and Sunday a.k.a the weekend
I’m curious who will post the ones for the Twins and Ultron… only Paul Bettany’s left with an active presence on social media (via his Twitter), unless they’re still keeping Vision out from marketing of course.
Maybe the official Marvel account will post theirs.
Wow.. so.. Jeremy Renner can do a nostalgic face as Hawkeye?
I’d love Hawk-Eye to be more: Distant/cold/aloof, being a darker, more gritty and serious, super-sniper. A mask/helmet would further add to mystify and “alienate” him.
He seriously needs the mask from the comics. It looks awesome and could easily be fitted with different typers off sensors, night/thermal vision, gadgets and so on. Make him a type of sniper-”Batman”.
Make his costume more interesting as well. I know it’s really lazy toput that out, without alternatives, currently I do not have any suggestions, except to look for inspiration from his comic-persona. I want him to be cool, though I find him incredibly boring. Luckily I always vote for the under-dog. Go Hawk, go!
(Generally same issues with Black Widow. Though she has been wonderfully utilized).
