Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Laura Pulls Out the Leather – The Mysteries of Laura Season 1 Episode 3 – The Mystery of the Biker Bar
Laura is startled awake. Upon going downstairs, she finds the boys holding slingshots. As she’s yelling at them, the doorbell rings and her neighbor is at her door holding a baseball. The neighbor accuses the boys of breaking his window with the baseball, but Laura manages to get out of it. The boys jump into a blanket fort and tell her she can’t punish them because they’re in the “safety zone.” A call comes in, and despite answering that it’s her day off, she’s notified that a body at the warf has been found with her card in his pocket.
At the dock, Laura is disheveled (as always) and identifies the body of Saint Jerry, a bar owner at a bar she used to visit during her academy days. That’s where she and Jake spent a lot of their early years together. Jake shows up at the scene and gives Laura a big hug. Mid-hug Laura notices a couple of tourists taking selfies with Jerry’s body in the background.
Jake and Laura head over to Jerry’s biker bar and talk to Ruby, Jerry’s partner (in every way). She mentions a homeless guy named Eddie who might have had a grudge against Jerry. At the precinct, Meredith and Billy are looking through Eddie’s file. Laura is asking Max about her new babysitter and wants him to swing by, covertly.
At a street full of bags and cardboard boxes, Laura and Billy find Eddie. He starts ranting about black helicopters flying in the air and pulls out a gun. Bill arrests Eddie, but when Laura tries to question him, he goes on another rant. Laura writes on her pad to get blankets, towels, coatracks, and a flashlight and shows it to Billy and Meredith, who are watching the interview. Meredith asks Billy why, and Laura flips the page, which says, “Because I said so.”
Laura builds a “safety zone” and talks to Eddie about Larry’s death. He says that “codename Birdman” hated Jerry, and that she’s always watching and spying on Jerry.
Sammi, the protester from the last episode, is watching the boys and teaching them about Harriet Tubman. Max drops in and acts suspiciously. Sammi says, “He’s weird, right?” and the boys reply, “Duh!”
Jake is upset that Laura has put Eddie in the psyche ward. Jake thinks it was her gut, but Laura says she knows Eddie didn’t do it because his gun was nonworking. Jake tells Laura her neighbor has come to him with a list of complaints about the boys, and Laura doesn’t want to talk about it (talk about flipped roles).
Outside Jake’s office, Laura asks Max how the boys were. He says everything’s good, but she doesn’t believe it and sends him back. Meredith tells her the same internet address that was used to report complaints against Jerry also has a bird website. He happens to live across the street from Jerry’s bar.
The man is a bit of an old school nerd, and he offers Laura Kombucha. Billy notes all his binoculars, and he says he’s an avid bird watcher, and of the local neighborhood violations. Laura asks him if he has a written record of all the violations.
At the precinct, Billy wants to know if Laura has gotten anything from the diary, and Jake wants her to put it away and solve the murder. Laura finds something in the diary and has Meredith pull up a 9-1-1 call, which is of the birdman with an argument in the background. They hear a woman screaming, “I’ll kill you Jerry!” in the background.
Ruby recognizes the woman’s voice as Faith McGowan, an ex-waitress. She tells Jake where she works, and Laura heads out. The bouncer doesn’t even check Laura’s id, which offends her. She tells Billy she’ll do it solo.
At home, Sammi is hanging out with the boys when she spots Max trying to sneak around the house. She threatens him with a scooter, and he immediately runs away.
Laura is talking to Faith about what happened, and realizes from Faith’s bruises she has an abusive boyfriend. Laura figures the boyfriend hangs around Faith’s place of work and steals while he’s there watching her. The boyfriend tries to run, and Billy goes after him. He manages to knock Billy down and takes off on his motorcycle. Laura hops on the back of another motorcycle and goes after him. The boyfriend ends up crashing and goes sliding off his bike.
Billy is hurt, but none of the paramedics are helping him. Laura pulls out a maxipad and tells him to use it to soak up the blood, but he doesn’t want to. She sticks it on his face anyway and he walks away. Jake tells her to get cleaned up for Jerry’s funeral, but not to wear something that makes her look like a cop.
Laura manages to find some black skinny jeans and a black leather jacket in the back of her closet, and the bigger miracle is that she manages to squeeze into them. The boys tells her she looks sexy, and she asks if Jake taught them that word. She sends the boys upstairs to get their piggy banks, and Laura thanks Sammi for staying late. Sammi promptly quits. Not because of the boys, but because Laura won’t trust her.
Jake visits the boyfriend in the hospital. The boyfriend won’t talk, and Jake decides to cut off his morphine. The boyfriend swears he didn’t touch Jerry, so Jake decides to tweak his splint. The boyfriend admits he was at a mall dealing with a stolen truck. Looks like the boyfriend didn’t do it.
Jerry’s wake looks like a party rather than a memorial service. Ruby is surprised so many people came, and she’s thinking she will go down to Florida. Jake shows up, surprised Laura brought six year olds to a wake. Later that night, Jewel’s
is playing, and Ruby makes Jake and Laura dance (apparently it was their song back in the day).
A minute into the song, Laura doesn’t think it’s a good idea, and Jake is trying to convince her it’s okay. Laura spots Eddie the homeless guy, and while she’s talking to him, she finds a slip of paper sticking out of his pocket. Laura finds a napkin with the name Flaco written on it. Flaco apparently is a loan shark.
Bill visits Flaco, and sits down to talk to him. Flaco denies killing Jerry. Flaco insists that Jerry was paid up, and when Billy tells him he was broke, Flaco claims Jerry said he got a silent partner. Ruby didn’t know about the silent partner, and says there were a lot of “suits” that would visit the bar to rub shoulders with real bikers.
Laura goes through the birdman’s diary and finds an entry about a limousine that was parked in front of a fire hydrant along with the license plate number. Meredith looks it up, and it belongs to a man named Lloyd Kramer. They figure Kramer wanted to build a high rise, but had to buy Jerry’s air above his building (I don’t know!). Jerry wouldn’t give up his breakfast outside, and they go after Kramer.
Laura and Billy hijack Kramer’s limo, and they take him to the dock. Kramer tells them he offered to buy half Jerry’s air rights, but Jerry wouldn’t budge until he needed his debt paid off. Laura figures Kramer killed Jerry to get the rest of the air rights, but Kramer says the remaining half is in his estate. That knowing look dawns on Laura’s face.
Laura visits Ruby at the bar. She remembers Ruby was cleaning with a heavy duty cleaner, and Laura figures it was to get rid of gunshot residue. Ruby tells Laura she put thirty years into their relationship and wasn’t going to get anything out of it. Laura put Ruby under arrest.
At the precinct, Sammi stops by to pick up her last check. Laura gives her a large check, which is prepaid for the next six months. Sammi tries to refuse, but Laura begs for some slack. Sammi agrees, and things are looking better for Laura.
