THURSDAY YOUR SAY: Is Bloom the Most popolare Winx?
Bloom, Thursday Your Say da The Oblivious Prattler
Today’s “Thursday Your Say” is about Bloom’s popularity.
Rainbow, Nick, and JAKKS Pacific seem to think she’s the fan favorite. If arcobaleno puts one Winx in an ad, she’ll be Bloom. If Nick needs a Winx Club rep for a crossover game, they’ll pick Bloom. If JAKKS makes a limited edition doll, it’ll be Bloom.
Are we fan as obsessed with her as they are?
It didn’t seem so when stores were struggling for months to get rid of their overstock of Bloom dolls. Either everyone had her already, o they were looking (in vain) for the other Winx. Thankfully, JAKKS learned from the experience and are shipping fewer Blooms and più of her Friends now.
But Nick and arcobaleno keep cramming Bloom-centric episodes into each season. If the trailer’s a giveaway, we can expect più in season six.
Not that that’s strange. This mostra was about Bloom for three seasons, after all — and she’s the founder and leader of the Winx Club. If she’s the main character, of course they’d focus on her.
But that doesn’t mean we’re focusing on her.

WinxStellaStar Yeah,I don't know why the Rainbow do this.... (I like Bloom, please don't misunderstood) Not everybody's favourite is Bloom. She is the main character in the show, ok. But why they are think, that everybody is a Bloom fan. When I download a Winx game 100%, that Bloom is the free charcter, and the other girls are locked. (You need buy theirs, that you want play with them. -_-) i like Bloom, so this not really bother me, but for somebody is very annoying. (who don't like her). And if they are want to impose everybody, that they be loved Bloom, it's only going to provoke conflicts..... So far, who not really liked Bloom, now will hate Bloom. Damm...great idea......
Sometimes I feel sorry for Bloom.... It isn't her fault....
yasmin124 i agree winxstellastar shes is not eveyone favourite some people hate her /like lovebaltor missangelpawes zanhar they big bloom haters me i dont who most popular winx bloom in the show fanpop musa/flora though are some flora hates like farhar and floraorstella and see a couple of musa hates
zanhar1 Bloom is just a Sue, end of story. The authors favoritise her and shove her in the audiences' face. It's super annoying. Save room for the other girls. And then there's the fact that 4kids shared that she likes extra cheese pizza, yet we don't even have an adequate back story for any of the Trix, ya know, the main villains of seasons 1-3 and 5-6.
And as WinxStellaStar mentioned, it's as if they are trying to make us like her. It's like they think everyone already does.

Bloom is the most recognizable Winx as she is, of course, the main character. Fan favorite- unlikely. Mainly because the over-load of Bloom has gotten sicking. There is only so much of any character any fan can take.
The fan favorite can be debated, every Winx fan has their own personal favorite. Some like Stella, others Flora and the list goes on. There is really no real way to determine who the true fan favorite is unless you wanted to take a fandom wide poll.

They’ve done polls in the past, and Bloom’s always won. I don’t know if that’s enough to go on, though.
Fun fact: Iginio Straffi’s favorite Winx is Stella or Flora (he’s said both in interviews). Not Bloom.

In my group of fanfiction writers, Bloom is the least favourite unless it’s parody. I’ve done some crazy parodies with Bloom in my 10 years as a fan fiction author and so have my friends..
To be honest I liked Bloom at first when she was awkward and unsure of herself, but she suddenly became great at everything she did and was regarded as the most powerful fairy (and Sky was the best specialist) really, when someone is the best I start to lose interest in them. The girl has no flaws save for her extreme temper and habit of jumping to conclusions.
I’d have to say that the way that Bloom started treating Mike and Vanessa in season 3 and the first movie made me truly loath this character. You see, I’m adopted just like Bloom is which at first made me like her more. However, when I saw Bloom suddenly start treating her adoptive parents like dirt because she found out she was a princess, well it turned my stomach. I can’t imagine treating my adoptive parents the way Bloom treated hers and adding to it by calling them by their given names. Those people took you in and raised you as their own, they deserve your respect as your parents.

I liked her more in the past, too. Now that she’s so confident in herself and has become super bossy, I’ve changed my mind about her.
And I agree about how she treats her adoptive parents. I cringed at that scene near the end of the first Lost Kingdom dub, where she called them by their names. I was SO glad Nick changed that part!

Actually, I think Tecna might be the most popular with the older fans. I don’t think Bloom is the most popular because other Winx characters, like Musa or Tecna don’t get bashed anywhere near as much as Bloom does. I’ve read a book about something called “perceived popularity” about the psychology that we tend to have that if a person shows up enough times or makes themselves known enough, then instinct makes us think he/she is the most popular. Same goes for the so-called “popular” kids in school settings, who are actually disliked by a fair amount of people in some cases.

I don’t know if Nick messed it up. After season three (the last season 4Kids dubbed), she did become a lot more confident and, in some ways, self-centered. That started in season four, and Nick didn’t help make that season, so that’s Rainbow’s fault.

She’s already in every episode of every season and was the main focus for 3 of them. Why does she need more spotlight?
I think that’s why the other Winx don’t get enough of the limelight and we barely ever see any potential to keep Bloom as “#1″.

I personally find her annoying, because she always has to be right, and take charge. I find her to be incredibly self-righteous. Sometimes, her arrogance is funny, though.

I know the 4kids dub in season 2 had Bloom say “SOMEBODY has to be the boss!” in reply to a witch asking her why she’s telling everyone what to do. It was the episode when the Winx go to Cloud Tower to protect the codex and they’re supposed to work together to patrol or something. In the witch’s defense, Bloom IS on the bossy side at times. I think she wasn’t so bossy, if at all, in the Rai English version.

That sounds like the “cat fight spell.” Maybe it made her bossier. I think originally, there was no spell and the Winx really weren’t getting along with each other. And of course, the witches wouldn’t stand to be ordered around by a fairy.
SailorWinx
7 September, 2013 at 1:46 am (UTC -5)
The cat fight spell didn’t exist originally. That episode was heavily modified. Bloom’s orb wasn’t big or red, just small. The teacher just asked if Bloom was feeling okay. She didn’t conjure up enough angst to rival a senior witch’s. The cat fight spell wasn’t there, the teacher was just trying to get the girls to remember bad stuff happening to them so they could channel it and Mirta told the teacher to stop. The Winx and witches were supposed to do guard duty, not write some report. The witches didn’t want the Winx there, feeling that they were more than capable of guarding their codex. The witches don’t agree to work together at the promise of a shopping spree. Instead, Mirta tells them to think of what Griffin would do if they didn’t cooperate and that intimidates the witches into working with the Winx.
I notice the 4kids version seems to try to “deflect blame” and other “flaws” with the girls by adding/creating magical influences, such as Stella being hit with a mood swing spell causing her to be really rude (from Season 1 where there’s that big fight in Magix against the Trix and the other witches) and then realizing it and rushing to tell Bloom. Originally, she was just being rude on her own and then realized it and was rushing to find Musa so she could apologize.
The Oblivious Prattler
7 September, 2013 at 6:39 am (UTC -5)
I guess my comment wasn’t very clear, but I remembered that the cat fight spell wasn’t there originally. I just couldn’t remember what happened instead.
I was thinking the same thing when I wrote the comment — that 4Kids kept trying to make the Winx seem almost flawless by pining their issues on magic. I wonder what they would have done with seasons four and five.

I can’t tell a lie. In season 1 Bloom and Musa were my two favorite Winx. In season 2 Aisha knocked Bloom back into second place and tied with Musa. That hasn’t changed for me but after season 3 Bloom’s standing fell in my eyes from 2nd to last place. By the end of season 4, I was fed up with the way she kept saying “you and I are so much alike Roxy.” But worse than that I hated the reaction she and the other Winx had to Nabu’s death. Sure Aisha’s need for revenge wasn’t the best course but as the leader I felt she should have been more supportive and maybe the others would have followed. Then again that may have killed the drama for the ending.
But I digress. I always felt like Stella was the most popular Winx and the most likable. She is quirky, hilarious, sweet, and very loyal. I love the relationship she has with Brandon and the way they call each other names is just so corny, its perfect. And honestly even though she was a complete idiot in season 5, she still came through and did her best. I would say if there is a Winx who is most popular, she is the one

I don’t remember who my favorite Winx was at first. Like you, I think I liked Aisha a lot in season two, but I usually like new characters (which is part of why I like Roxy). But I think it wasn’t until later that I choose Flora as my favorite.
It seems overall, people haven’t been very sympathetic towards Aisha. She’s had to cry things out by herself a lot this season, but even last season they didn’t stand by her like they should have. Of course, when Bloom’s upset, everyone comes running to her side.
Nabu’s death scene was bizarre. It almost felt like they let him die. I know canonically, they didn’t, but we all know they could have tried harder to save him.
As for Stella being a fan favorite, I can definitely see that. She’s the most cheerful, and most people like that. Even Iginio Straffi has called her one of his favorites.

Bloom’s story is over. We know she’s gonna marry Sky (eventually), so yeah, that would be a nice little “happily ever after” moment for her.
I think if we’re gonna make someone else the main focus, everyone should get a turn. Aisha got a lot of attention this season, so maybe it should be someone else in season six.

The unfortunate truth though, is that I doubt we’re going to see full seasons centered around anyone but Bloom. It’s true though, Bloom’s story technically ended with SOTLK, but the story as it stands, is still about Bloom, with the Winx at her side. We’ve seen it for 5 seasons and 2 movies, the writers have not missed an opportunity to thrust her back into the spotlight by whatever means. That’s part of what annoys me about this. The show’s original premise was Bloom finding out she was a fairy, mastering her powers, and reuniting with her kingdom and her birth family. That’s been done for a long while now. The Trix were defeated several times, Darkar, Valtor, The Wizards of the Black Circle, and now Tritannus have been defeated. And really, all of these villains have set “all powerful Bloom” in their sights, one after the other. But it seems like no matter how many villains the girls vanquish, there’s another one waiting to fall in line. It’s as if the story never ends, and there’s no target path in sight. And since most of them are out to destroy Bloom or steal her powers, seeing her as the anointed leader of the Winx, I don’t think it’s going to stop. I mean some of the later villains, like Tritannus and the Wizards were associated with other characters [Tritannus with Aisha, the Wizards with Roxy] it still always manages to be Bloom who vanquishes all evil. I’d like to see some seasons, or at least some lengthy episode arcs about other characters, but, having established Bloom as the head honcho, I seriously doubt it.

Bloom is the main character, and essentially, who the show’s storyline was based upon, but no, I’d argue that she’s not THE most popular in the group.
In fact, I don’t think there is a single most popular Winx member. It’s all about opinion, and the qualities in each character that make them either likable or unlikable in the eyes of specific fans. For example, my two favorites are Flora, for her sweetness and association with nature, and Aisha, because her transformations are my favorite colors, she’s a water [or Morphix] fairy, and I enjoy watching her character come out of her shell. But for other fans, Flora and Aisha might be their least favorite. It’s all about individual likes and dislikes.
However, I think that paying attention from the beginning of the series, and watching Bloom’s journey unfold, I think that her popularity stems from reliability. At some point in everyone’s lives, we wonder who we are, who we’re meant to be, and for some of us, where we come from. And seeing a character portrayed as heroic as Bloom undergoing this journey makes her character more enjoyable and relatable to a realistic audience. Bloom used to be my favorite for this reason; I liked the idea of an ordinary, seemingly homely girl emerge from her shell and discover that she was more than she ever thought possible. But as of late, I think she’s too haughty and in our faces.

That’s a good point. Now that Bloom’s journey is over, she’s not the same person we related to in the beginning. It’s like when people become starsy. If they stick to their roots and respect where they came from, the people they grew up with still feel connected to them. But most of the time, their egos get too big. They forget the “little people” and the humble lives they used to lead. I feel that may have happened to Bloom, in a way.

I definitely think that’s it. Also, I think that we as fans forget that while we love the show, and there’s content we can relate to, Winx Club was still written for children. It’s realistically easier for young children to focus one one main character, or a pair of main characters, than it is for them to focus on 6 or 7. My thinking, is that in the eyes of the writers, there had to be one main character and one only. So in a sense, the show really is going back to being Bloom and the Winx Club [or Magical Bloom] as opposed to the Winx Club.

Despite the fact that it is a kids show there are still loyal older fans whose opinions I feel need to be taken into consideration. I honestly feel that despite the dismal quality of season 5, the writers did try to take into consideration some of our requests (there was Flora drama for once, we got to revisit Melody and Lynphea. We actually saw Zenith above and below water!) while still trying to maintain that kids show feel (which didn’t work out so well in my opinion). However most of these same kids have been following Winx Club since Nick aired it and I can tell you that one of my nieces would like to know why we only ever hear about Musa’s mom and everything associated with her mom such as the whales and not much else. Bloom is not her favorite. Not even close.

The sad truth about that is that even though there are thousands of adult and teen fans, there are millions of child-fans. And to put it as bluntly as possible, marketers are going to focus on their target demographic, and which group accounts for most of their profits, ratings, etc. Think about it, who is actually home on Sunday afternoons to tune in to the show? No me, I’m working. Who’s buying all the toys? Every now and again I might purchase a Winx doll to collect, but I’m not picking up every playset, outfit, and Halloween costume. The thing is, that even though there are a ton of us older fans, at the end of the day, they’re still marketing towards kids, and in all likelihood, that’s what they’ll continue to do.

Same here with my daughter, she’ll be 9 in a few weeks and she doesn’t like Bloom either. Her favourites are Flora and Stormy . Of course she wasn’t thrilled with Flora’s actions during parts of the show too, she wanted to know why Flora didn’t just talk to Helia- smart kid.
I don’t feel the writers are taking anyone’s thoughts into consideration, they’ve fallen into a slump and can only seem to write about Bloom and Sky having issues. They forget that it’s the Winx Club, Straffi scrapped the title ‘Magica Bloom’ the writers and directors should pick up on that and embrace the rest of the club. And by embracing I don’t mean giving Musa and Riven another fight and having Tecna and Timmy suddenly act awkward and talk about how many prime numbers they know.

In my other Winx group the favorite seems to be Stella, for all the reasons Niki listed in her post. I don’t really have a favorite Winx, and I don’t dislike Bloom as a character. I do wish she didn’t get all the spotlight all the darn time though!
Of all the girls Bloom has the most backstory but it sometimes feels like she has the least defined personality. Tec is logical and intelligent, Flora is gentle, Stella is fashionable and kinda self-centered with a heart of gold, but Bloom is just the main character. She used to be uncertain but powerful, but now she’s just main charactery. I find in my writing it’s easier to make characters consistent when they can be described in a few words, so maybe the show’s writers are having trouble with her too and that might be the reason for some of the bad personality traits she ends up with sometimes.
Add me to the list of people who hated when Bloom used her parents’ first names in Secret of the Lost Kingdom. Not cool, Rainbow, not cool. I was also a little mad that Nick went with “what do you mean I’m adopted?!” That’s so overused, and the 4kids scene, “The day we adopted you…” “Was the happiest day of your lives, you told me a million times.” was just so sweet.
Winx Club may have many more seasons to come and it’d be great if they could do a season focussed on each girl, say an ancient enemy attacks Solaria and if it can capture the princess it’ll have power over the realm. So Stella gets a few flashbacks, her parents feature more in the episodes, and maybe she gets to deliver the final blow against the enemy. Not pushing the other girls out of the spotlight but giving Stella the top spot just for that season, then next season they’d go to Linphea and get plant-based transformations.

“It sometimes feels like she has the least defined personality.” You hit the nail on the head. I said this in another comment, but even though we adult, and teen fans love the show, that doesn’t change that it was written for children. And in most children’s shows, the main character[s] isn’t/aren’t the main character[s] because of some amazing feat or something that sets them apart. The main character is the main character because the writers say so. They get the most exposure, they’re held on high above everyone else, and they’re made to be the center of attention. And I think that’s exactly what they’ve done with Bloom, really for no reason at all.
Actually, the surprise adoption pitch wasn’t Nick’s idea, that was the original. The 4Kids version wrote it out and just made it about Bloom discovering her parents knew she had magic before. But the original Rai was about Bloom discovering she was adopted, and therefore, giving her an idea that she was not “human,” and her powers must mean she was born in another realm.
I also think it’d be cool to see more focus on the other girls, and definitely on other realms and the people in them, However, I think it would be a waste of time to do five complete seasons on every other girl and their specific realms. I mean, 26 episodes each, and one season for EVERY Winx is a whole lot of episodes. Maybe if they make season 7 about discovering more about their homeworlds, but do several episodes for each girl as opposed to an entire season?

I liked what you said about the Winx personalities. My friends and I see Aisha as the sporty and adventurous one, Tecna as the brainiac and gadget queen, Musa as the musical genius, Stella as the hilarious and quirky one, Flora as the kind and comforting one, and Bloom as the bossy little [insert your own word here]. Season 1 was Blooms best. She stood out while blending at the same time. She had the whole group mentality thing going. This carried on in season’s 2 and 3. Even when she felt left behind, she supported her friends.
Season 4 she turned into a Sky obsessed drama monster who still feels that she needs to prove herself when it’s already been proven that she is the “one” if you get my drift. They need to recapture that group mentality that was evident in the beginning while still showcasing the other girls and exploring all the characters in debt.
I always say Stella is the fan favorite because she does Bloom’s job of thinking about the others even if it doesn’t always turn out so well, like Aisha at the party, and Tecna and Timmy’s date that was interrupted and sweetly awkward, Flora’s awesome dress that caused her to almost get eaten… All Bloom does is run off to the shark’s eye because she wants to prove that she is macho and can carry her own burdens and instead almost gets killed. There should be a season where the others rebel and show Bloom that she is being too self absorbed and turning the Winx into a dictatorship. Maybe she should go evil again which results in a personality reset (: lol sorry guys. I saw an opportunity to rant about Blooms many shortcomings and I ran with it

Thanks Steffauri, I didn’t know the surprise adoption was in the original. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised; it’s an overused plot point because it makes for a great scene. (I just ran into it twice in the last week- rereading Sweep and watching Elephant Princess.)

Yeah, you should definitely make a point to watch the original Rai episodes. You really don’t realize how many things 4Kids changed when they got the show until you see how the story flowed in its original state.

Bloom is the main character, so she’s always going to get the most attention, even if the show shouldn’t be revolving around her in seasons 4 and 5. Like her or hate her, she’s always going to be the main star. Is she the most popular? Probably not among the older demographic, which only likes main characters in a few shows and prefer other, more dynamic characters. The main demographic probably likes her the most, as younger people tend to like the viewpoint character more. This is a generality of course. Since I assume the main demographic outnumbers the older fans, Bloom probably is the most popular.
Personally, Bloom is my least favorite. That doesn’t mean I always hate her. She was an idiot in season 1, but she was new to everything and earnestly struggled, so it’s easy to forgive her. Season 2 was her best, where her arrogance, ignorance, and over trustworthiness was balanced out by leadership, ambition, and attempts to bring everyone together. This was her best season. Season 3 may be her worst, as she became overpowered and angsted too much, along with some other problems. Same problem with SotLK. Her personality was the least of MA’s problems. I actually liked her in season 4, where she showed some actual maturity, but still had her flaws. She’s too whiny and stupid in season 5, yet right too often. She has her ups and downs as a character.

Hello, I know that Bloom is main character, but for me my favorite is…. Stella.
She is funny, beautiful, princess of Solaria. And, I think, her transformation’s is cooler than Bloom’s. So I think the best Winx is Stella!

I totally get that she is the main character and that the show was technically about her but that kind of ended after season 3 and the 2 movies. Even the villians had nothing to do with her. The Wizards were after Roxy and not her and Tritanus was Aisha’s cousin. This season Bloom has just annoyed me, you would think after everything she and Sky went through in the past seasons she wouldn’t be this insecure. Aisha had so many problems this season but it was overshadowed by Bloom’s relationship problems. I used to love her but Aisha showed up in season 2 with a different attitude then the other girls and I loved her. Its always great to see stories about the other girls but they need more then one episode. I would still love to know about Tecna and Flora and their parentage, we don’t even know what their parents do. Hopefully this new villain will be connected to something or someone other then Bloom….

Well, I hate Stella.. Most of her lines are stupid and the show could do without them.. I mean, you don’t need to be an idiot to be cheerful.
I like Flora.. She is all modest and kind, and always acted this way since the show has started.

I love Bloom, she was my first fan-girl obsession(4th grade) and like I’ve said before she and winx club inspired me to write. I have been trying a new way of thinking by listening to my young self and see how to reconnect with that feeling of wonder. I often find myself in the love circle of Musa (not good) and the fun side of Stella with the caring of both Bloom and Flora. I hate the nick voice of Bloom though, it’s so monotone. Tecna feels like a background character to me and Layla/Aisha is the emotional opposite of me/ her voice actors tone is. I hate people who don’t like the main character of a story because why would they watch the show if they hate the focus. I’ll admit I hate Sailor Moon (Selina) but i love Usagi and the original creator wanted to focus on Sailor V whom i LOVE. Anyways Bloom is popular because she is part of a great story.

I’ve always thought that Musa was probably a big fan favorite- a lot of my friends on the Winx club forum like her. Roxy is also a really big one.
I remember the first time that I found out one of my friends in real life was a fan as well (It was pretty obvious that I was one; I had pictures of Tecna and Flora on my locker last year) she said that Bloom was her favorite. She wasn’t THAT big of a fan like me because she said she wasn’t keeping up with season five (she doesn’t have cable, but I don’t really understand why she doesn’t just watch them on the internet). I’m thinking that maybe people who are smaller fans Bloom, or maybe those who are younger.
Or those who just haven’t seen season five.

…Oh, when I said “smaller fans Bloom”, I meant that people who aren’t obsessed with the show as much as us might like Bloom.

I can’t speak for all targeting ages but I think for some older fans, Bloom might be a nostalgic favorite. It’s like when you forget about the show for a while and pick it up again when you’re older. You remember that you felt so much like Bloom, struggling to find out who you were and what your purpose in life was and when you watch the show again, she has a nostalgic place in your heart that reminds you of…yourself somehow.
That’s how it is for me anyway. Bloom is not my favorite today but I just can’t bring myself to hate the character because I could relate to her so much when I was younger. It’s like I can excuse her for her bad behavior that she’s had lately, because I don’t want to ruin my nostalgic memories of her and the show. Something like that.
By the way, Bloom looks very pretty in the picture of her that’s featured in this article! So elegant.

I feel bad because Bloom is my favorite character. But yeah she does need to take a bit of a backseat, like in Seasons 2 and 4.
