Effy feels the hairs on the back of her neck prickle.

She whips around, kohl-rimmed eyes narrowed, gazes into Freddie's dark, soulful eyes, eyes filled with adoration. She can't help wishing for a different pair of eyes; vibrant, blue ones framed da spidery eyelashes longer than her own.

To her left, Effy spies JJ giving her a nervous smile, running fingers through his curly hair. Effy bites her lip, wishes that the hair was straighter, was darker.

Cook is seated successivo to JJ, his hand raised, ready to deliver unnecessary comments, ready to draw an exasperated sigh from the teacher. Effy sighs herself, wishes for someone capable of intelligent conversation, capable of witty banter.

Effy turns around, shuts her eyes, tries to concentrate on the teacher's voice. Tries to remind herself that Tony Stonem is gone, that he left her.
