When he appears, he looks at the screen and talks directly to the audience. From the commento he makes on how much the audience has grown, it's clear that he's talking to the fan that grew up watching him. A lot of fan of the original series watched the film just to see Steve return, so having a scene where Steve acknowledged them was a big deal.
