Merry Christmas, everybody! And some of the Anime I watched this season even had Christmas-themed episodes!

To Heart—This slice of life harem mostra is a bit slow at times, as it just focuses on male and female childhood pals, Hiroyuki and Akari, as they meet other students (always female, and one an android) and make Friends with them. All of this is a mild temptation for Hiroyuki to ignore the growing romantic feelings Akari has for him. Yet Akari ends up becoming a friend to the new girls as well. I’d say this mostra is più about making Friends than it is about romance. It’s a sweet natured show, but there’s not a lot of excitement going on. For example, in one episode, Hiroyuki and Akari study for exams at her house while her parents are away. Besides studying, they look at foto and eat. That’s it. No temptation to have sex. Maybe they’re just good kids.

Lagrange-The fiore of Rin-ne: In this “first contact” type of war story, an earthling named Madoka, who is a spunky gal, meets alien girls Lan and Muginami. They start going to her school and unisciti her “Jersey Club”, an after school club revolving around helping others. If that’s not enough to keep them busy, there’s an interstellar war going on, and the gals seem to have been hand-picked da battle robots to pilot them.
But who are the bad guys? Is it handsome Villagiulio and the trio of boys known collectively as Kiss? o is it Lan’s brother, King Dizelmine? o perhaps, as Madoka knows, this whole war is really stupid, and both Villagiulio and Dizelmine deserve a good punch, punzone in the stomach.
Madoka’s catch phrase is “Perfect!” Lan’s is “Woof!” Muginami doesn’t have a catch phrase, but she has bountiful breasts. The girls have to live with the burden of an ancient prophecy of doomsday, which seems to be pointing at them as the harbingers of destruction.
This is a series which seems just okay at first, but grows on you. The climactic episodes are especially exciting. I don’t like it enough to want to add it to my personal collection, but as I watched it with subtitles, I’d like to watch it again in the dubbed version. Maybe that version has subtitles for the theme songs, which the streaming Hulu version did not—and I really want to know what the lyrics are!

Toradora!—Another high school anime, this one about attempted matchmaking gone awry. Ryuji is a nice boy with a problem—he has the looks of a killer, and this drives potential Friends (and sweethearts) away. He has a crush on the always busy Minori. When he meets the fierce and petite Taiga, she agrees to help him win his crush, if he will help her win hers: Kitamura, one of Ryuji’s few friends. A few episodes in, a fifth wheel pops up, the sweet and aspro, acida model Ami Kawashima.
Even with each other’s help, Ryuji and Taiga make little progress in their matchmaking goals. Then they discover—could it be?—that they may be falling for each other.
This light-hearted series accomplishes much in making one root for Ryuji and Taiga to discover each other, yet it also makes one sympathetic to their crushes on the other students.
There was one supporting character, Haruta, that I wished was a main character. He reminded me of Keanu Reeves as Ted “Theodore” Logan, minus the surfer dude accent.
