I think Hayden did a good job making Kate sound like a teenager while Kate Higgins did an even better job making her sound like a mature mother.

I agree, Kitsune. In the first film, Kate was just being the usual good adolescent daughter trapped between her arranged marriage to Garth and her not-so-secret Amore for Humphrey. After everything worked out in the end and she had pups, she became even più responsible as a wife and mother and Kate Higgins has pulled that off fairly well.
