(Scar here again. This was one of the scariest days in my entire life!)
Once Jon got us to the hospital, he parked and hustled all of us inside. The hospital was a maze of white linoleum, beige walls, and people in white uniforms. The whole combination scared the shit out of me.
When the emergency room people finally let us go inside and see him, I was 10 feet ahead of everyone else.
Inside the room, I hesitated. For the first time, I wasn't sure that I really wanted to see him like this.
Jon walked in behind me and crouched down successivo to me. "What's wrong, Scar?" he detto softly.
I sniffled. "I'm not sure I wanna see him that way," I said. "All hooked up to those machines and shit."
Jon scratched my ear, in that way that Colby always did and that I always loved. It helped me relax a little.
I went over to the letto and put my forepaws up on the rail. I immediately wished I hadn't.
Colby's face was black and blue. He had a few big slashes on his face, undoubtedly from when he got out of the plane. His hair was matted with dried blood, as were his lips. Here was a big white square on his right hand, and his left leg was wrapped in the same material. He looked so different from the man that I loved, and it made me start crying right there.
There was a tube in his nose, little plastic wires stuck to his chest, a needle in his arm, and a clip thing on his finger.
A soft beeping echoed through the room.
successivo to his letto was a metal pole with a beige box on it. On the box was a screen covered in lines and numbers. The lines were spiking and dipping in a steady rhythm, but one of them was still.
A tall, balding man came in wearing a white coat. A small blue plastic square detto "Mariano, PhD". This must have been Colby's doctor.
The doctor shook hands with Jon and Uriah, but completely ignored me, Kate, and Humphrey.
"Gentlemen, I'm Caleb Mariano, a neurologist here at Harborview." He spoke with a British accent.
Jon and Uriah introduced themselves, and then us.
"Alright, Jon and Uriah, we've done a few tests on him and we've gotten some preliminary results, but they aren't promising."
Jon crouched down at my side and put his arm around me. "Hit us with it, doc," he said.
Mariano looked down at the clipboard he was carrying.
"Colby has a compound fracture of his upper leg. It's broken in three separate pieces. Most of the fingers on his right hand are broken, due to the canopy of his fighter flying off. He's got cuts all over his face from the inside of his helmet."
He flipped a page on the clipboard over.
"On to the più serious parts, he's got a fracture in his skull and his brain is swelling. We'll have to take him into surgery first thing tomorrow morning. Also, one of his lungs was damaged during the ejection from the plane, as te can see da the blood residue on his lips."
The graphic descrizione sickened and saddened me all at once. The doctor kept talking, but I couldn't listen to any più of it, else I would either throw up o pass out. I buried my face in Jon's giacca and cried.
The doctor heard me crying and said, "Why is that lupo crying like a human? And why is it in here anyway?"
"First off, this is Scar. She's Colby's mate and she's a very special wolf," snapped Uriah, instantly ready to back me up.
Kate spoke up as well. She pointed to Jon with her paw and said, "This one is my mate, and this is Humphrey, Uriah's mate."
The doctor nearly jumped out of his skin at the sight and sound of Lupi talking like humans.
"This is a dream," he muttered to himself, leaving the room, "This has to be a dream." Humphrey and Uriah laughed. Jon picked me up and sat in the room's only chair, cradling me.
"Scar," he said. "It's going to be alright. He'll come out of it and be the same old guy that te love."
I stuttered, trying to get out what was bothering me the most.
"B-but... W-what if h-he d-d-dies?!" I said, choking back a sob.
"Scar, he's not going to die," insisted Jon.
I sighed. "I hope you're right. Can I have a minute?"
Jon nodded and put me down. He gestured to the others as he left and they followed him. Uriah shut the door behind him.
I hopped up on my hind legs and balanced myself on the rail of his bed. The soft beeping provided a fonte of inspiration, for I knew that as long as that device made noise, he was still living.
I reached across the rail and put my paw on his cheek.
"I don't know if te can hear me," I detto softly. "It's me, Scar. I just want te to know that I'll always be here for you. You're my Omega, Colb, and te can't die. Not while..."
I swallowed. There was a knot in my throat as I spoke the successivo words.
"Not while I'm pregnant with your pups."
I uttered those words and felt a sense of weight leave me.
I stretched a little farther and flicked my tongue out. It just barely kissed his cheek.
I hopped back down and went to let the others back in. I couldn't tell them now. But they would find out soon enough.
