Hugh glared, Lisa hid her head in her hands and Jo grinned victoriously. George didn’t know how he felt. He knew he let down his friends, but at least he didn’t lie.

Jo’s lawyer muttered ‘thank you, I do not have più questions’ and George for the first time realized how annoying his British accent had become at that time.
Hugh’s lawyer reacted initially and stood up impulsively.
“May I ask più questions, your honor?” he tried. George knew he was holding on the last straw.
“Just… be quick…” the judge brushed off and nodded in approval.
“Mr. Mathews, when did te first suspect them having an affair?” Hugh’s lawyer started.
“I believe it was… when that articolo came out…” George started remembering. That articolo set everything off.
“And before that?”
“No, I don’t recall.”
“So, te are saying that te hadn’t suspected anything until then?”
“No… Everybody knew they were friends. And they acted like ones. However… However when that articolo came out… we all started looking for some evidence of them having an affair. I mean, when you’re told that someone is having an affair, that someone being your long time friend, and te haven’t noticed, te start overanalyzing.”
“And what did te come up with? I assume te didn’t just let it be.”
George didn’t know if he should answer this question. più exactly, how he should answer it. If he admitted spying on Hugh and Lisa and invading their privacy- therefore finding out nothing, it could help Hugh with his divorce. But it wouldn’t help George winning his Friends back. It would just push them away.
Lisa would lose his trust, the trust he had hard time earning. He didn’t know if he was to sacrifice that when it meant so much to him.
However, George knew he had to stop thinking about himself. He had to start thinking about others, and the one he could help at that moment was Hugh.

“Sir? What did te come up with?”
George snapped back to reality.
“I… sort of… I performed a small investigation and I didn’t come up with anything. When I realized how ridiculous I was for believing that magazine… I was broken. I knew how they felt. I was their friend and… when your Friends domanda your acts… That sucks.”
“Thank you… I have no più questions.” The lawyer finished.
“You may be excused.” The judge nodded at George.
Once he stood off the stand his eyes searched for his friend. When his eyes hadn’t spotted her, he realized she must have left when she heard him testifying.
George cuore started burning.
If this weren’t going to help Hugh with his divorce, George would regret his testimony for the rest of his life.
