Any hobbit would have been strong enough...Merry is needed to lead the Shire, and Sam is needed to have a happy ending with Rosie...so Pippin would be interesting.

It had to be a hobbit right? In order to make some struggle and for a good story it had to be a dependable character =D Sam is the most suitable choice. ^^ He didn't submit to the ring even though it was bekoning him to.
It would have been a tough road just like Frodo's but anyone else would have either used it for evil or it would have been SUPER easy.. That's my opinion at least

i would have chosen sam but he was tempted by the ring at one point where merry hadnt and pippin was plain out stupid ( dangerous ) and it had to be a hobbit

I picked Sam because he did have the ring for some time and he was somewhat willing to give it up.

I mean he carried it for a time and didn't get homicidle when Frodo took it back.

wow.....all of these characters would be great beside the men, too easily persuaded.....I think that the men would NEVER had let the women so you can count them out, Legolas my fave character yes BUT he is too sensible it wouldn't make for a good drama scene near the end( If they wanted the Job done fast and effecient it would be Legolas), Gimli...i am not so sure,fatty Bolger.....NAH! umm..Merry i guess...Pippin...I think that it would for me.....be between Pippin and Sam.....I LOVE that picture of Pippin though!!

I had to say Aragorn; I think Sam would have done great, but he's not a soldier, Gandalf or Galadriel might have turned into another Sauron, Pippin and Merry aren't as strong-willed as Frodo, Legolas would have been good too I guess, I can't see Arwen or Eowyn doing it.

What i don't get is that people picked Sam of all people. If you read the book Sam gets corupted by the ring when he finds it so he would the worst choice

Sam was not lured by the ring's power; his heart was good. He wanted to help Frodo bear the burden, but had no desire for any sort of power.

Actually, if I could remind everyone, Frodo DIDN'T succeed, Sam did, so he's the right choice.

Faramir would have been the best if Frodo was not chosen. The movie completely changed his character. In the book Faramir was not affected by the ring! Complete contrast to his brother Boromir.

I don'tSee why you pick Sam. The power and weight of the ring on his shoulders would've been too much. Don't get me wrong, I love Samwise, but he's just too sweet and too soft for it. Aragorn is much stronger, and would've been able to do it easier. Sam only made it there with Frodo because he didn't have carry the ring.

I dissagree with the answer about Frodo being the only one able to do it. He almost DIDNT do it, remember? It was Smeagle (Spelling?) And Sam, who saved the day, in the end.

Sam is the only one who was able to voluntarily give up the ring (yes, he only had it a short time, but still). That in itself places him above most others - aragorn, gandalf, galadriel - who said no to the ring knowing it would corrupt them. Sam saw the ring needed to be taken further and that he could do so, but at the same time recognised it was not his burden to bear, and relinquished it back to frodo. Sam ftw

I also think Feremir because he gave up the ring, even through getting it would have saved his city and earned his fathers love. Not many could do that. However I picked Sam because he did carry thing ring for a little and gave it up. he also accompanied Frodo even through he did not have too.

^You're right Faramir would have been good. Or Sam. But [in the movie] Aragorn seemed to have a profound understanding, of how power (not even nessisarily of the supernatural kind) corrupts. That's why he avoided the throne all his life. He was worried the power would currupt him the same way it corrupted Isiuldur. I think that gave him and Frodo and special relationship. Aragorn seemed to really understand what Frodo was fighting against.

gandalf said it himself: frodo showed a surprising resistance to the ring's powers. anyone else wouldve succumbed to the ring way before frodo did.

I always thought Sam's and Frodo's positions would be better switched. Frodo was an ok ring bearer, but kind of whiny and he was one of my least favorites. Sam, on the other hand, demonstrated immense courage and even though he only had the ring for a short amount of time, he used it wisely. Aragorn would have also been fine, but as CSI9em said, the hearts of men are more easily corrupted.
